Jasper, a member of the John Birch Society, has found a new threattothe American Way-the UnitedNations. In "Global Tyranny... Step by Step: The United Nations and theEmergingNewWorldOrder,"Jas- per attempts to reveal the United Na- tions' sinister conspiracy to rule the world. Jasper is a right-wing ideologue, not a conspiracy theorist. "Global" lacks the careful, subtle approach needed to fully expose such a con- spiracy and, more importantly, ex- plain why it exists. If you do not al- ready believe in what Jasper says, "Global" may not convince you. Forexample,Jaspercomplainsthat theUnitedNationshasbeen afront for communistagentssinceitscreationin 1945. But is communism still a threat after the apparent fall of the Soviet Union? Jasper cites "New Lies for Old," a book written in 1984 by a KGB defector who wams that the apparent "liberalization" of the U.S.S.R.andEasternEuropeismerely a "strategic deception"meant to dupe the kind-hearted, giving West. Inter- estingly, the anti-communist Jasper believes a communist source when it advances his belief that communism is still dangerous. Jasper is oblivious to the fact that the KGB often sends phony "defectors" to provide false information to the West, andif there's anyone who would want to stop the liberalizationoftheU.S.S.R.,itwould be the totalitarians in the KGB. Jasper also does not sufficiently explain the strange alliance between communists and Western "Establish- ment Insiders." Many of these Insid- ers belong to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a group that advo- cates world government. While Jas- per criticizes the CFR's totalitarian, communistic goals, he fails to explain why individuals like George Bush and Bill Clinton belong to this organiza- tion.In fact, many arch-capitalists sup- portone-worldcauses.Jasper assumes that many of these capitalists are com- munists-in-disguiseanassertionwhich he never proves. He ignores the possi- bility that these internationalists really want to establish a capitalist world market. But if that were true, Jasper would have to criticize the American institutionofcapitalism, andthatwould be impossible for this ultra-patriot. Jasper's solution to the United Na- tions menace is equally simplistic. He parrots the John Birch Society's slo- gan, "Get USoutl"Unfortunately, even if Americans do awake from their "slumber" and really do get the U.S. out of the United Nations, evil CFR members will still control the U.S. govemment and its foreign policy, a problem which Jasper himself de- scribes. Jasper does not say how we freedom-loving Americans should ex- pel these CFR puppets from our be- loved democracy. A conspiracy within the United Nationstoestablishglobaltyranny may indeedexist, butJasperfails toprove it. He is content to focuson the surface, on an alleged conspiracy that suits his own political ends. In doing so, he overlooks the more insidious, more uncomfortable conspiracies that may lie undemeath. Jasper cannot separate his ideology fromasearch for the truth. -Oliver Giancola E I WHOWHATWHEREWHEN Sex, Madness and John Cusack The glorious Michigan Theater is offeringastringoflushmoviesforthe sensualist, the romantic, the thrill- seeker in us all. Ifthatdoesn'tsetyourpulseracing, how'bout the NC-17literary flesh fest, "Wide Sargasso Sea"? No, this is not the story of one girl's erotic journey from Milan to Minsk. Instead, this is a film adaptation of the searing Jean Rhys' novel of the same name. Rhys' work posed the question of what it was that drove Rochester's wife mad in Charlotte Bronte's gothic standard, "Jane Eyre." The story is set in 1840s Jamaica, where we meetthe young Mrs. Rochester-to-be and wit- ness her tempestuous courtship by Rochester. "Wide Sargasso Sea" is directed by John Duigan, of "Flirting" fame, and stars Karia Lombard, who now can be seen (six-cineplex-shows- a-day) dallying on the beach with America's Sweetheart in "The Firm." "Sea" can be seen at the State Theater and the Michigan, leaving you with no excuse not to indulge. If your tastesrun more towards the bizarre, catch "Fellini's Intervista."
