named U.S.
BY JULIE GARRETT
DAILY STAFF REPORTER
Afternearlythree monthsofsearch-
ing, President Bill Clinton has named
Kristine Gebbie, a University doctoral
candidate, as the administration's na-
tional AIDS policy coordinator. The
appointmentcomes after several other
candidates rejected the position.
Gebbie will be the country's first
national AIDS coordinator, a position
Clinton promised to form during last
year's election. As AIDS policy coor-
dinator, she plans to form amore coop-
erative federal response to AIDS pro-
grams in the Centers for Disease Con-
trol (CDC), the Departnent of Health
and Human Services and several other
govemment agencies.
"I will be making sure all of the
(AIDS programs) work together,"
Gebbie said.
Gebbie will be involved with the
administration's AIDS budget, al-
though she will not be managing it.

AIDS czar
Gebbie's office will work aspartof
the Domestic Policy Councilandoper-
ate out of the executive office complex
near the White House. Clinton admin-
istration officials decided Gebbie's
position wouldbe moreinfluentialfrom
the White House than out of another
agency like the Department of Health
and Human Services.
"I work on behalf of the president,
not for one specific agency," Debbie
said.
Currently, Gebbie serves as chair
for the CDC and Prevention's AIDS
advisorycommittee,whichiscurrently
reviewing the center's AIDS programs.
From 1989 to this past spring, Debbie
acted as Washington state's secretary
of health.
In addition, in 1987, President
ReagannamedGebbie tothe Presiden-
tial Commission on the Human Immu-
nodeficiency Virus Epidemic.
Gebbie will assume her new role
Aug. 2.
