Hooiveld, a women's swimmer, andWebber,amen's basketballplayer whohas announcedhis decision to turn professional, were named Michigan's female and male Athletes of the Year for the 1992-93 season this past week. Hooiveld won the NCAA's Swim- mer-of-the-Year honor after she won nationalchampionships inthe100and 200-yard breaststroke events at the NCAA National Championships. She anchored the Wolverines' run for a fifth-place national finish, the highest in school history. She also defended two individual and two relay titles at the 1993 Big Ten Championships, giv- ing her eight Big Ten championships in two seasons. Webber made the first-team All- American squad last year. He aver- aged 17.4pointsand 10.1 reboundsper game in helping the Wolverines reach their second NCAA Championship game in two years. Webber also made the NCAA All- Tournament team for the second straight year, the only player to ever accomplish that in his first two years. In the 70 games which Webber woreaMichiganuniform,theWolver- ines posted a 56-14 record. He holds the second spot on the school's all- time blocked shots and field goal per- centage lists.
