BormetandKingbothcompetedin the Trofeo Milone Wrestling Tourna- ment in the capital city of Italy the weekend of June 5-6. Bormet won the 74-kilogramchampionship,whileKing placed third in the 100-kilogram cat- egory. The American team, coached by Lock HavenUniversity'sCarlPoff, took third place overall behind Iran and Russia. In his first match, the All-America Bormet pinned Italy's second-best wrestler, Jonathan Molfino, in thefirst round at 4:37 of the match. Unlike NCAAcontests,intemationalmatches take place in one five-minute period. Bormet then prevailed over Tunisia's Lotfi Tebissi by a technical fall (11-1) in the semi-final. The Athletic Department,however,decideditwould send a reduced squad. "My understanding is that the money was used elsewhere," Schmidt said. Rather than risk the national em- barrassmentofsendingonly fourteam members, Schmidt said she decided to raise the money needed to send the remainder of the squad. Through contributions from pri- vateorganizatons-asweliasmoney from herself and the team - Schmidt raised thenecessary travelfunds.After accruing the money, Schmidt said she received a phone call from Jeff Long -who, she said, was calling on behalf of Jack Weidenbach. "He said that I was out of line and that under no circumstances would more than four cheerleaders travel to the playoffs," Schmidt said. Long said he did discuss travel arrangements with her, but denied tell- ing her she was out of line.
