Beasties
by Scott Sterling
The Beastie Boys have finally done
it. After breaking out with the snot-
nosed partyclassicLicensed ToIll, and
simultaneously dazzling and dumb-
founding the masses with the under
appreciated sampledelic delight Paul's
Boutique, those three bad brothers you
know sowellhave droppedthe BOMB.
Their latest (and greatest) offering
is the too dope, hip-hop-jazzcore-
kitchen-sink masterpiece, Check Your
Head. Three years in the making, this
disc sounds like the Meters doing the
Starsky and Hutch theme, complete
with superstoopid Huggy Bear guitars
andBillyPreston-meets-TheMackfunk
daddyorgansintheJamesGang'sback-
yard. But is it rap? When pressed,
BeastieAdamYauchjustleavesitupto
the people to decide.
"That's not our department to say,
that's your department," Yauch says.
"Our department is to make some-
thing that sounds good to us, and you
guys figure out what it is."
Much of the new album's fatter-
than-that sound can be attributed to the
Beasties' new West Coast stomping
grounds,thedenofsinknownastheG-
Son recording studio.They builtit from
the ground up, complete with skate-

got back
board ramps and basketball hoops.
According toYauch, (aka MCA), hav-
ing your own set up makes all the
difference in the world.
"It's really the best shit, I would
recommend it to anybody making mu-
sic. If you want to make something
that's creative and original and really
comes from you, then I would say that
if you have eight hundred dollars to
spend, buy a four-track and a micro-
phone instead of going into some six-
teen-track studio for a couple of hours.
That way you have more time to play
around with it and get to know what
works."
With three years being more than
enoughtimetoputoutanalbum,Yauch
surmises why it took so long
"The first day seemed like a week,
the next week seemed like two days.
Then a whole year and a half went by,
and that didn't seem like a year and a
half, and then there was a month that
only seemed like two days, and the rest
of it went pretty normal."
Allsettoembarkon their first proper
tour since the infamous Licensed To Ill
tours, theBeastiesarereadytodo some
serious head checking of their own.
"We're gonna do all kinds of shit.

Holy Smoke
Beggar's Banquet
Take the cover of Holy Smoke, put
a hand over the left side of it, and the
whole story is told. Sad but true, the
Vampire Lestat has lost his teeth. And
I'm afraid he's too sleepy to notice, or
even care.
Holy Smoke, the fourth solo offer-
ing from the star of countless gothic
daydreams, sounds as if it were re-
corded under the influence of a heavy
dose of lithium. Drowsy keyboards
dominate the moody mix, drowning
the songs in a misty sea of melan-
choly. While songs such as "Kill The
Hate" and "Keep Me From Harm"
occasionally show the quick glimmer
of a fang or two, the soup in this
cauldron never rises above a low boil.
"Low Room" is the one song that
does the Nosferatu two-step with some
degreeofgrace. Murphy spits venom-
ous words of fire over lush, rolling
hills of drums and a twist of violent,
scuffling guitars. Reminiscent of the
song "Mask" from a certain goth band
Peteoncesang for,"Low Room"draws
a trickle of blood.
While Murphy still possesses one
of the most haunting voices ever, all
fog-choked, sexy, and evil, it's not
enough to rescue Holy Smoke from
being a rather tepid affair. Let's hope
that next time, Lestat can recapture
some of that old hunger. It's sorely
missed.
