16 - The Michigan Daily Summer Weekly - Wednesday, July 29,1992 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Townsend signs with Rams' by Josh Dubow Daily Football Writer Former Michigan linebacker Brian Townsend recently signed a contract with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams. Townsend, who was a starting outside linebacker with last year's Big Ten champion Wolverines, reported to the Rams' training camp in Irvine, Calif., July 15. Townsend is being represented by Cincinnati based agent Richard Katz from the Katz Management Group. Katz is very optimistic about Townsend's chances of mak- ing this year's Rams' squad. "I'm expecting Brian to make the roster and contribute asabackuplinebacker andspecial-teams player," Katzsaid. "We're very excited about his prospects of making the team since he is the only linebacker drafted by the Rams." Another factor in Townsend's favor is that the Rams, who are coming off a 3-13 season, are rebuilding under a new coaching staff. Former Seattle Seahawk coach Chuck Knox has taken over the reigns in Los Angeles. Knox emphasizes a ball-control offense, and strong conservative defense. Last season at Michigan, Townsend was fourth on the team in tackles with 64 including 11 tackles for losses and a team leading six quarterback sacks. DISAPPEARING ACT: Former Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard remains unsigned by the Washington Redskins. Howard, the Hesiman Trophy winner, has not yet reported to Redskins' training camp. The world champion Redskins made Howard the fourth selection in last April's NFL Draft. Divers.
