In yesterday's 100- meter freestyle race, Gustavo Borges - swimming for his native Brazil - won the silver medal with a time of 49.40 seconds. Borges, who was an NCAA and Big Ten champion in his first season at Michigan, wasedgedout by Alexandre Popov of the Unified Team. Popov won the gold with a time of 49.02. The bronze wenttoFrance'sStephanCaron ofFrance,whofinishedin49.50.Ameri- can Jon Olsen placed fourth at 49.51. Teammate and world record holder Matt Biondi was next at 49.53. Borges was also a member of the seventh-place team in the 800-meter freestyle relay for Brazil.
