SI isses the boat on swimming picks

by Adam Miller
Daily Sports Writer
In this week's "Olympic Preview,"
Sports Illustrated made some interest-
ing predictions about the bunch of
Barcelona-bound Michigan swimmers
in the sectionomnisciently titled, "Who
Will Win What."
Mike Barrowman is forecasted for
the gold in the 200-meter breaststroke,
an event Barrowman owns the world
record in. No problem with this predic-
ion. If Barrowman loses the event, it's
only because his new body suit sprang
a leak.
Eric Namesnik, a redshirt senior
and 400-meter individual medleyist, is
Slotted for the Silver in Spain. Again,
no problem. Namesnik took the silver
in the 1990 World Championships in
this event, so it's reasonable to expect a
repeat. However, he has been training
intensely, and a gold wouldn't be that
_ i surprising.

Then we've got trouble. Kent
Ferguson, a springboard diver for the
Wolverines, is predicted for gold over
Mark Lenzi. Lenzi, a Kimball Diver
from Ann Arbor, beat Ferguson in the
qualifyingcompetition.Now Ferguson
is a former world champion and Pan

American gold medalist in the spring-
board, so SI could have a point. But
Lenzi is hot.
Then again, you could say Roque
Santos is hot, having beat Barrowman
atthe IndyTrials.SoI'lldubthisonetoo
close to call.
But later, the SI Experts erred far
more seriously. Gustavo Borges, the
freestyle sensation in his first year at
Michigan, is predicted not to medal as
he swims for his native Brazil. Let's
review the evidence.
For: He won both the 100 and 200-
yard freestyle races at the Big Tens, and
he's swimming in equilvalent events.
Against: He's swimming against
MattBiondiinthe 100,and ArturWojdat
in the 200.
Conclusion: Maybe Gustavo is not
golden, but Borges takes at least one
bronze, and perhaps more.
Barrowman: gold. Namesnik: sil-
ver. Borges: bronze. Alvizuri: sorry.
And Ferguson will win something.
Only unlike SI, I'mnot silly enough
to say exactly what.

from staff reports
The Big Ten women's basketball
all-star team lost its opening two games
on its eight-game tour of Australia and
New Zealand last week. In the opening
game, theBig Ten womenlost88-54 to
the Victorian Institute of Sports. They
lost their second game to the Knox
Women's Team 77-63.
The team consists of one player
from each Big Ten school. Senior for-
ward Trish Andrew is Michigan's rep-
resentative on thesquad. This is the first
foreign tour by a Big Ten women's all-
star team.
Against Knox, the Big Ten was led
by seniors Toni Foster of Iowa and

Averrill Roberts of Ohio State. Foster
led the way for the all stars with 16
points, while Roberts added 10. An-
drew scored four points. Sharyn May
led the victors with 17 points.
In the opener, the women were
forced to play the same day they arrived
from the United States. The fatigue,
along with hot foul shooting by the
Institute led the hosts to victory. The
Institute hit 28 of 30 free throws on its
way to the victory.
Once again, Foster led the Big Ten
in scoring with 15 points. She was
followed by Northwestern's Patricia
Babcock's 10 points. Andrew scored
six for the all stars.
