'... at one point I found myself standing before an oil of a horse that I figured was probably a self-portrait judging from the general execution ...' - Peter De Vries From potters to printmakers The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair shows you artists in action by Christine Slovey Would you like an opportunity to learn something during the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair other thanjusthow many people can be packed into the city? The fair does have certain elements more interesting than rubbing elbows with thousandsofyuppies, youngandold(er) doing their culturalduty-checkbooks in hand. For instance, a little known aspect is "Art in Progress" occurring throughout the Art Fair. These demon- strations are aregularevent, butappar- ently no one knows about them unless they've "happened upon" one in the years past. The demonstrations may not be as touching as the (in)famous throwing scene from "Ghost" but there will be potters, sculptors, painters and printmakers explaining and showing you the creative process-- from inspi- ration to final product. Okay, they may do some of the inspiration work ahead of time, but whoknows --things could get pretty spontaneous. Youcan ask the artists questions while they work; like why they think their particular media is the best(I have iton good authority that ." most people have seen a pot thrown on a wheel, but hardly ever get to see it done effortlessly, with flowing technique.' -I.B. Remsen, potter they all believe this). Scott Hartley, who will be demonstrating watercol- ors, points out that "how much you learn depends on how much you know already," but at least the demonstra- tions add some excitement to the fair. I.B Remsen, who will be demon- strating his Slip Decorated Stoneware says, "... most people have seen a pot thrown on a wheel, but hardly ever get to see it done effortlessly, with flowing technique." Slip, by the way, is colored clay in a liquid form. Remsen feels strongly about the demonstration as an opportunity to deepen the Art Fair ex- perience. "I believe in public educa- tion. You get to meet the people who make the art and you get to learn some- thing." And, let's not forget, this is a chance to do something aside from pushing through massive crowds of people to look at a lot of art you can't possiblyaffordon anaveragestudent's income. There are eighteendifferent artists tak- ing part in the demonstrations. Artist, media and demonstration times can be found in the Art Fair Guide, available at the information booths.
