The group led the Wolverines to the Final Four in its first year together, and it looks destined to repeat that perfor- mance in the immediate future. The Michigancoaching staff,know- y ing the team returns seven members of its rotation this fall, spent much of last season's recruiting period watching youngsters who will not graduate for another year. That strategy may well pay off this season if superstar guard Randy Livingston, a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder from Isidore Newman High in New Orleans and the consensus No. 1 player in the talent-laden class of '93 decides to join the Wolverines. The Boston Globe reported June 19 that Livingston, in town for the 20th annual Boston Shootout, was working. with a list of 11 schools, at the top of which was Michigan." Whether the order of the list is valid * remains to be seen. When asked about FILE PHOTO; ! Big Ten names Howard top male athlete Change in playoffs brings more CCHA teams to Joe Louis by Josh Dubow Daily Hockey Writer The Central Collegiate Hockey Asspciation's athletic directors re- cently approved changes in the confer- ence playoff format for this season. Because of this year's expansion - which will add Kent State and Notre Dame as full-fledged members and Alaska-Fairbanks as an affiliate member-the 12-teamleague needed to change its playoff format. "This is great,"Michigan assistant coach Mel Pearson said. "It gets more teams involved and becomes a bigger event. There'll be more people there and it gives more schools a shot to make it to the Joe. It's good for the league because it keeps the sysytem similar." Under the new system, the top six teams will host the seventh through 11th-place teams along with Alaska- Fairbanksinbest-of-threeseriesMarch 12-14. UAF's seeding will be deter- mined by the conference office. The six on-campus winners will be reseeded based on their regular-sea- son records and willtravel to Joe Louis Arena the next weekend. The top two teams will receive byes, while No. 5 will play No. 4and No. 3 will face No. 6in the quarterfinalsFridayMarch19. The nextnight, the No. 1 team will face the 4/5 winner and No. 2 will play the 3/6 winner. Sunday's champion- ship will feature the semifinal win- ners. Theotherproposalfortheplayoffs would have had the fifth through 12th teams play a Tuesday night one-game elimination round. The winners would have advancedto the best-of-three on- campus quarterfinals before proceed- ing as the playoffs did this season with the semifinals at Joe Louis. While Pearson likes the new system better than this proposal, he still sees flaws in the format. "If you take six teams to the Joe, two teams won't play the firstnight," Pearson said. "That first night can really throw you off. In the NCAA j Tournament this year, every team that got a bye, besides us, lost their next game. It's hard to get into it mentally after sitting out a night. But overall, it gives the best teams the bestchance to adavance."
