SPORTS Page 8 The Michigan Daily A Rice is chosen fourth in NBA draft Wolverine heads for Miami to play for last place Heat. 6 BY MIKE HEAD Best to worst. Glen Rice, Michigan's most prolific basketball scorer ever, went from the NCAA champion Wolver- ines to the NBA celler-dwelling Miami Heat quicker than you could say "swishhhh". The National Basketball Association held its annual college draft on June 27 and Glen Rice was one of the seven "lottery" selections. The Los Angeles Clippers, who possessed the second pick, opted for Duke's Danny Ferry over Rice, thus preventing a reunion with former Michigan guard Gary Grant. With the arrival of the Heat's pick, there was little to guess about whom they would select. "With the fourth pick in the NBA college draft, the Miami Heat select Glen Rice from the University of Michigan," NBA commissioner David Stern announced. The scoring sensation, who established new scoring records in the Big Ten and in the NCAA tourney during his collegiate career, became a member of the lowest-scoring team in the NBA this past season, "We expect him to help our team increase our potential to score," head coach Ron Rothstein said. Following the announcement, the nervous Rice said that being drafted exceeded the thrill of winning the national title. "Winning the title was great, but joining the pros is like no other feeling," Rice said in an interview with WTBS. People from the Miami Heat organization were very enthused about obtaining Rice. "We are very impressed with Glen," Rothstein said. "He's a terrific young man and as good a shooter to come out of college in the last ten years as anyone." "We were obviously delighted," Stu Inman, director of player personal, said. "He's an intelligent kid and has shown us that he can pick up new drills quickly." Projected as a small forward, the rookie will not necessarily start right away. "He has to win the job," Rothstein said. "We ask all of our players to play the game of basketball. He may need time to adjust to the new game of pro- fessional basketball" Both Rothstein and Inman share an eager optimism for the rookie. *I After setting the all-time Michigan scoring record and winning the NCAA title last year, Glen Rice will try to continue his success in *,the National Basketball Association with the Miami Heat.
