Seniors depart in second place BY PETER ZELLEN Carl Yastremski played for the Boston Red Sox for over 20 years and never won a World Series. However, he did give them his all during those seasons and accumulated Hall of Fame statistics. To a lesser degree, the same can be said of the three.graduating members of the 1989 Michigan softball squad. Catcher MaryAnn Daviera, centerfielder Beth Mueller, and Nan Payne, who plays second base, all will leave Michigan never having won a Big Ten title. In the last three seasons the Wolverines have lost the conference title by a game or less. In 1987, Michigan lost the final game of the season, placing second. In 1988, the Wolverines lost three of their final four to Indiana to fall out of first place and lose by a half-game. This past season, Michigan needed to sweep its last four games in order to tie for first with Iowa. The Wolverines won the first three but lost the last game and finished second, again. All three played with fire and determination and yet they never could win that final game. They supplied both the statistics and the leadership that was the spark of the Michigan softball team. "Three years of falling short; I don't know what to say," Payne said. "This year's team was one of the best we ever had. But it was a lot harder losing last year than this year. We lost this season during the year. If we had won a game earlier then we would have won." "I've always been happy this year," Payne explains. "I'm not a standout but if I can play consistently then that's good." Mueller was named captain to start the season and got off to a .350 start during the preseason. She finished the year at .229 but was second on the team with 24 runs batted in. "I have no regrets about what we've accomplished," Mueller said. "We concentrated all the time and played hard. We lost it as a team" Daviera started her career at shortstop but her strong arm moved her to catcher. She was regarded with high praise from coach Carol Hutchins. "She's a real good player," Hutchins said. "I think she's even better than (former Michigan All-American) Alicia Seegert." The 1986 Rookie of the Year finished at .254 with 18 RBIs. Defensively, Daviera only made three errors. All three have a lot to be proud of concerning their four years on the Michigan softball team and all will leave with pleasant memories despites those late season losses. 6 0 S 0 0 ,L v w w PRODUCTIONS, INC.
