Wichita St. shocks 'M'

...-

BY JAY MOSES
Ooohh, so close.
The Michigan baseball team ended its season by
falling just short of two long-term team goals. The
Wolverines lost the Big Ten Championship Playoffs
to Illinois in the final on May 20, and bowed to
Wichita State in the final game of the NCAA West II
regional in Fresno, CA on Monday.
In Fresno, the Wolverines blew a golden
opportunity to make their first College World Series
appearance since 1984. They advanced through the
winners' bracket by beating Pepperdine, Fresno State,
and No. 1 seed Wichita State. They then had two
chances to beat Wichita State, but the Shockers took
both from Michigan in the same day to win the
regional and wrap up the World Series berth.
THE WOLVERINES barely squeaked out a
victory in their tournament opener against Pepperdine.
They scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth
inning and held on to win, 4-3. Dave Peralta got the
win and John Locker notched his fifth save.
Host Fresno State was next on the list for
Michigan. The Wolverines prevailed, 5-3, behind a
strong performance by Mike Grimes (9-3).
In the third game, lefty ace Ross Powell held
Wichita State's formidable attack in check while the
Wolverines banged out 15 hits in a 14-5 victory.
The Shockers made their way through the losers'
bracket, setting up the final matchup with Michigan.
In the first game, Russell Brock (4-3) was
masterful, holding the Shockers to three hits, but the
Wolverines could do no better. Wichita State eked out
a 3-2 victory.

IN THE FINAL, Kirt Ojala held the Shockers
scoreless for three innings, but in the fourth, they
exploded for six runs, chasing Ojala and breaking the
game open. The final score was 9-5, and the
Wolverines' season was over.
Michigan was granted an NCAA berth despite los-
ing the Big Ten tournament in the final game as well.
The Wolverines got to the finals of the Big Tens
by way of the losers' bracket. After disposing of Ohio
State, they faced Illinois on May 19 and were
manhandled, 7-1. Junior Mike Grimes did not have his
best stuff, and facing the Illini for the first time this
year didn't help Michigan's cause, either.
The Wolverines then beat Ohio State to set up the
final matchup with Illinois. The Illini proved to have
the Wolverines' number, shutting them out, 2-0. Tim
Lata started for Michigan, but lasted only 2/3 of an
inning, giving up both Illinois runs. Kirt 6jala went
the rest of the way, giving up only three hits.
Blue Banter
-Junior Powell was named the team's Most
Valuable Player, winning the Ray L. Fisher award.
Powell also won the Geoff Zahn Most Valuable
Pitcher award. He finished 10-0, with a 2.49 ERA and
98 strikeouts. For his career, Powell is 21-1, with 201
strikeouts in 200 innings.
-Senior designated hitter Kourtney Thompson won
the Bill Freehan Top Hitter award. Thompson led the
team with a .351 average, and he also chipped in five
homers and 20 RBIs.
-Michigan's All-Regional tournament selections
were Tim Flannelly, Chris Gagin, Jim Durham, and
Phil Price.

Junior Ross Powell was named Michigan's Most Valuable Player
and Pitcher. Powell finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record.
