This past weekend, the Golden Gophers defeated the Wolver- ines, 5-2, in the finals of the Big Ten Champ- ionships, claiming their fourth title since 1967. Michigan has won the other 19 titles in that span. The Wolverines (15-10 overall, 11-1 conference) defeated Illinois, 5-2, and up-and-coming North- westem, 5-3, setting up the championship match. In the finals, the Wolverines' lack of depth, most notably the loss of senior captain Dan Goldberg to a shoulder injury, prevented them from winning their third consecutive title. Once again, sophomore Malivai Washington led the team, sweeping all three of his matches without losing a set. First-year player David Kass also won his three matches in straight sets. Kass was named all-Big Ten, joining Washington and Goldberg in the select group of first-year players to receive this honor. Washington, currently the number one ranked collegiate player, capped off an incredible year by earning Big Ten Player-of-the-Year honors. For the third year in a row, head coach Brian Eisner was honored by his colleagues as Coach of the Year.
