ANN ARBOR ACURA Baseball makes Big Tens, sweeps WSU BY JAY MOSES The Michigan Baseball team, at least for this decade, is batting 1.000. The Wolverines clinched a berth in the Big Ten playoffs last weekend, making them a perfect 9-for-9 in playoff berths since the conference instituted the present tournament format in 1981. Michigan (41-11, 18-5) accomplished that feat by taking three of four games from Ohio State Saturday and Sunday in Columbus. Against the Buckeyes, Michigan dropped the opener on Saturday, 5-4 in eight innings. The Wolverines went on to sweep the remaining three games, 19-4, 5-2, and 14-2, with Tim Lata, Ross Powell, and Dave Peralta notching the wins. Michigan's scheduled doubleheader at Toledo on Tuesday was rained out, but not before Michigan lost a player to the injured list. Catcher Todd Winston, who was the number one receiver at the time, suffered a stress fracture rounding first base and will be out for the season. Shortstop Chris Gagin, who was out for several games earlier in the season with a hand injury, reinjured the hand and will be out indefinitely Wednesday, Wayne State returned to Ray Fisher Stadium hoping to avenge Michigan's April 4 sweep of the Tartars. However, Wayne State ace Steve Savage bowed out of his last start of the season with a sore arm. Tartars' head coach Rod George used three pitchers, but nothing he offered could tame the Wolverine bats, which finally showed some of the punch they have only hinted at all season. Michigan banged out 17 hits in the opener, a 19-4 drubbing in the Wolverines' favor. First-year infielder Tim Flannelly continued his hot hitting against Wayne State, going 4-for-6 with six RBIs, including a monstrous, 400 -foot plus home run in the opener. Jeff Tanderys (3-0) went four innings for the win, while Rick Leonard mopped up. The game was called after six innings for unspecified reasons. The nightcap was decidedly closer, as Wayne State pitcher Henry Miller kept the Wolverines slightly more in check. The 8-3 Michigan victory was a combination effort from pitchers Tracy Piehl, Jason Pfaff (3-4), who got the win, Russell Brock, and John Locker.
