SPORTS The Michigan Daily . Paae 8 . _;V- - this. New coaches hired BY STEVE BLONDER Wolverine sidelines will feature two new coaches this fall, as Beverly Fry was hired to coach the woman's gymnastics team and Patti Smith was named field hockey coach on an interim basis. Smith replaces Karen Collins, who resigned recently "to pursue other career opportunities," only three weeks before fall practice opens. The late change has left several players baffled about how things will proceed in the fall. Several of the veteran players had complained about Collins to athletic department officials after last season, but no connection has been established between her leaving and the complaints. Smith has been a Michigan assistant coach for the past two seasons, and recently earned a masters degree in sports management from Springfield College. Fry comes to Ann Arbor from West Virginia, where she was a graduate assistant for the past two seasons. Before that, she was an all- American gymnast for Mountaineers. Ex-head coach Dana Kempthorn resigned earlier this summer to pursue other interests. Steve Blonder Well, why should we be surprised that ex-Michigan coach Bill Frieder recently lost a recruit. Frieder had offered guard Herb Brown a scholarship, but Brown couldn't quite make the Arizona State cut, as the university failed to accept him. Michigan had been recruiting Brown until his academic problems became apparent. With Brown's inability to get into school already public knowledge, one wonders why the ASU sports information department denied the whole affair yesterday. Maybe Frieder really is having an effect there. - Speaking of losing players, the University of Pittsburgh is now accepting resumes for basketball players. After losing their entire five-man basketball recruiting class to Proposition 48, Pitt is in danger of losing two starters for academic reasons. Both BobbyMartin and Brian Shorter face the same math final examination that felled last year's starting quarterback Maybe Pitt ought to redesign its "counting for athletes" class. - Question: In what year did Louis Elbel compose "The Victors"? - Now that Michigan marching band director Eric Becher has added an "ex" to his title, one can only wonder whether the marching band will rate as highly as this year's Wolverine football squad. Early answer: No. The School of Music has been consistent, having to employ only three marching band directors over the past 64 years. Let's hope the halftime shows this season also break with traditions of consistency. - Speaking of football, when was the last time the Wolverines stirred up this much pre-season interest? Sports, academics, and other thoughts Never, according to coach Bo Schembechler who said recently that the Wolverine ticket office has never had more requests for season tickets. I guess the increase in ticket prices didn't scare too many people away. Either that, or more people decided they wanted to be at Michigan Stadium in-person the next time Bo slams his head-set on the turf. - Kudos go out to Wolverine swimmer Mike Barrowman, who just set a new world-record in the 200-meter breast-stroke. " Answer: 1898. " I guess "piazzas" were more appealing to Danny Ferry than winters in San Diego. The Sand Diego Clippers lost the services of top draft choice Danny Ferry when he signed a contract to play for an Italian team for an estimated one million dollars. I guess I'd take the money and run to Italy before I played for a good college team which masquerades as a professional basketball team. Ferry's reason for going overseas was the wealth of talent San Diego already employs. Sounds like Ferry was worried about competition from players who haven't yet helped San Diego make it in the NBA. If I were Danny Ferry, the thought of competing for a job with the likes of Joe Wolf and Kenny Norman might send shivers through my spine. That is if I had to play with a hand tied behind my back. - Boxer Mitch "Blood" Green is suing Mike Tyson for $25 million because Tyson allegedly reneged on an agreement made after a back-alley altercation to fight Green. Sounds like Green has finally found the only area where he has a chance against the champ. _ GATIDE1N Restaurant Szechuan, Hunan & Peking Cuisine DINE IN CARRY OUT DELIVERY COCKTAILS SUNDAY BUFFET Open 7 days a week Mon-Thurs: 11:30 am-10:00 pm Sat: 12:00 noon-11:00 pm Fri: 11:30 am-11:OOpm Sun:12:00 noon-10:00 pm 3035 Washtenaw, Ann Arbor 971-0970 Y a The Calendar of The University of Michigan The Casdar connesmuting. c.sdconerencea--- - SUNDAY witothermoakappesingeacAweekoncampu.ItisbasedoThUnimnayRmc d "is i * ," " *'.s"d ' ed AUGUST 6 by the Mihia Stuentdsem~bly.
