Paae 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, June 10, 1988 I 'AV- . - . --- . - -.1 . . .--, , --- - -, wwmmmm Blues Continued from Page 9 overdubbed some ear-gouging guitar hooks which added a nice blues touch to the album's slithering skank rhythms and led to a world- tour with the Wailers. After record- ing Marley's Babylon by Bus, Donald continued his work with Peter Tosh on his stellar Bush Doctor and Mama Africa LPs. An example of Donald's marvelous guitar work can be heard on his ar- rangement of "Johnny Be Good" off Mama Africa. By nourishing natu- ral Nyabinghi choruses with Chuck Berry blues-boogie duckwalks and embellishing traditional Rastafarian repeater and funde drums with smokestack guitar blasts, Donald perfectly intertwined the greasy cackle of the blues with Dread- locked, ragamuffin reggae-rhythms. After Donald returned to the United States, the Kinsey Report formed in 1984 with the help of Big Daddy. Alligator Records quickly signed them, and boom, their debut LP called Edge of the City was born. The album featured almighty strut and groove basslines provided by youngest brother Ken- neth, turbulent, heaven-shakin' drumming by oldest brother Ralph, and Donald's acrobatic, gymkata blues-guitar. On "Full Moon on Mainstreet," the Kinseys elucidate the hypnotic quality of the night's natural glow- ing orb by swinging back and forth between Donald's lunar, lava-flow guitar solos and Kenneth's elastic, Rubberband Man basslines. Donald metamorphoses into a howlin' wolf hybrid, growling out gospel trills that are punctuated with a vitriolic, 'voodoo-chile' vernacular. "Answering Machine" features Donald igniting the blues-fuse with his incendiary slide-guitar work. Our hero is constantly stymied by that damn answering machine and you can just picture Donald, cool as ever, looking side to side, then raising his soul-axe above his head and coming down like a stick of lit Delta dynamite on the cursed piece of technology. "I Can't Let You Go" kicks your heartbeat into the irregular flutters of secret and spontaneous love. The compulsive guitar and careening bassline stuff the claus- trophobic listener right in his or her lover's closet. You can just feel your heart-pumping as cheated-on legal-mate #1 smashes at the front door; your brain screaming "it's through" but your heart saying "I'll be back tomorrow." While the Kinsey Report's Edge of the City is definitely an LP worthy of a classic "forget the neighbors, crank the stereo" evening, you can bet their amp- crushing live show at Rick's on Wednesday evening will initiate more than a few gut-bucket shouts and screams. With family patriarch Big Daddy opening, Gary, Indiana's Kinsey Report will rock the house with their original, steel-edged blues Afro-fusions. KINSEY REPORT plays Rick's next Wednesday, June 15 at 10 p.m. Proudfather Big Daddy opens up.
