SBo supporters flock to defend new AD

Y STEVE BLONDER
The University's Board o f
egents' decision to name Michigan
otball coach Bo Schembechler as
new athletic director has met
th a positive response.
"It's the greatest thing that could
ave happened. Bo is the best choice
>r the school, and the best choice
r Michigan. That's what it's all
bout," said Richard Caldarazzo, a
rominent alumnus.
Caldarazzo and other alumni,

urging the regents and Interim Business Operations Jack
University President Robben Weidenbach becoming the associate
Fleming to offer Schembechler the athletic director where he will be in
athletic director position with no charge of the day-to-day operations
strings attached. of the department.
"We have put together what we "Bo will handle the situation very
see as an outstanding combination. well. There is no doubt in my mind
Bo is respected and admired here and that he was the best qualified
elsewhere. He is a very well-known candidate for the job," said Assistant
name and Jack is a skillful Athletic Director Don Lund. "And
manager," Fleming said. Jack is a solid guy. He'll do a great
Personnel in the athletic job for us. Everyone working
department remained enthusiastic together, teamwork - that's what
about Schembechler assuming the it's all about."
tnn .nn and iTniversitr Tirectoro f Some individuals outside the

athletic department have expressed
concern publicly about
Schembechler and his commitment
to the athletic department and
academics.
Harris McClamroch, former chair
of the Senate Advisory Committee
on University Affairs, feels that the
women's and minor sports woes
would continue under Schembechler.
"Schembechler needs to give
significant attention to all of the
sports and all of the aspects of the
athletic department," McClamroch
said. "I hope that he will, but in his
own words his primary commitment
is to football. He must give the
athletic directorship the attention it
deserves."
Members of the athletic
department felt McClamroch's
further concerns about athletes

academics were unwarranted and were
based on a lack of knowledge about
the athletic department.
"Bo is very concerned about
graduation rates and kids. His players
getting a degree is Bo's main
objective," said Lund.
Regent Deane Baker (R-Ann
Arbor), who has continually pledged
his support for Schembechler, said
"there is no doubt in my mind that
Coach Schembechler is the best
candidate for the job."
The regents alleviated their
concern of Schembechler holding
both jobs by hiring Weidenbach.
"I'll be taking care of faculty and
personnel decisions to free Bo up for
big decisions and to do his
coaching," said Weidenbach
immediately following last month's
press conference.
