walking only four.
Michigan batters were angered by
the home plate umpires calls
throughout the contest, but their
opponents thought differently.
"I figure it was going both ways.
They got me on a close call," said
Michigan State catcher Scott
Makarewicz. "We were starting most
hitters with the curve. When the
umpire knows what's' coming, it
makes it easier for him to call
strikes."
Michigan's Mike Grimes also
seemed to benefit from close calls,
striking out 11 over eight innings.
"Grimes pitched well enough to
win," said Middaugh.
In the third inning Michigan
State scored three times, collecting
four of its seven hits. Three of those
hits could have been outs. After a hit
batter and a sacrifice bunt, Steve
Preston and Kevin Dalson hit dif-
ficult grounders to short and second
respectively that resulted in another
run scoring with no further outs
recorded.
Big Ten batting champion Mike
Davidson followed with a sinking
drive that went off leftfielder Greg
McMurtry's glove for a single. Dan
Masteller drove in the Spartan's third
run with the only clean hit of the
inning.
Michigan got single runs in the
first and third on RBIs by Phil Price,
just back from a hand injury, and
Haeger.
But Krumm got stronger and
stronger, striking out seven over the
last ftre innings.

"He's got those Superman quali-
ties," said Spartan head coach Tom
Smith. "He smelled the barn."
The next day brought a different
team and pitchers, but the same re-
sults. Minnesota's Darren Knight
and Dennis Neagle combined to hold
Michigan to one run on three hits.
Mike Ignasiak kept Michigan in
the game, yielding just one run in
the first seven innings, allowing the
Wolverines to tie the game at one in
the seventh when Darrin Campbell
singled in Jim Durham from third.
In the top of the eighth Michigan
squandered a chance to go ahead.
Tom Brock led off with a walk but
was caught stealing when Chris Ga-
gin didn't go after a pitch way out-
side on a hit and run.
In the bottom of the inning, the
Gophers capitalized on their chances.
Tournament Most Valuable Player
Vince Palyan singled with one out
and Jay Kvasnicka followed with
another single. Paul Weinberg dou-

bled to the gap in right-center to put
the Gophers up by two. Weinberg
scored on a single by Brian Raabe
off Gagin's glove at second.
Neagle retired Michigan in order
in the ninth to earn the win.
The six-foot four Neagle also
gained the victory in the champi-
onship game against Michigan
State, which needed only to win one
game out of two to win their first
title in nearly ten years. They didn't.
Right after their close win over
Michigan, Minnesota swamped the
Spartans, 17-4, behind 14 runs in
the last three frames. In the champi-
onship game on Sunday, Minnesota
again used the big inning - this
time a four-run fourth, to win its
third title in eight years. Michigan
has won it the other five times.
