The Michigan Daily - Friday, May 27, 1988- Page 5 ROTC students gear up for military careers BY ERIC LEMONT Many University Reserve Officer Training Corps graduates - after years of mental and physical preparation - will soon reap the benefits of their work by becoming Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. Annette Taylor, who became an officer a month ago, said she is "ready to get on to the real Army" after four years each of high school and University ROTC. Taylor said she hopes to work in Korea with the Army Transportation Corps, where she might be responsible for planning and scheduling deliveries of equipment from city to city. ALTHOUGH Taylor is only 22, she said the prospect of heading a platoon of 18- to 35- year-old soldiers does not overwhelm her. "I think there's going to be problems (adjusting to a leadership role)," she said. "They will put you to the challenge and test you... (but) with self confidence and a strong technical background they will be willing to follow you." ROTC tries to instill additional leadership skills in members when they attend a 16-week' Officer Basic Course after graduation. During the course, the officers receive specialized training in their respective branches and fill out assignment preference sheets, ranking parts of the world where they would like to be stationed. ROTC graduate Meredith Vermillion said she hopes to be stationed in West Germany because she feels that if a war were to break out, being in Europe would put her in the middle of it. "I suppose I'm nervous, but I'm looking forward to it," she said. NOT KNOWING where she will spend the next few years of her life does not phase Vermillion. "My father worked in the mili- tary, so I'm used to moving and not knowing where I'm going next," she said. But active duty and the chance to lead a platoon are not available to most ROTC graduates, said Lt. Col. Charles Narburgh, chair of the University's ROTC. "This year for the first time, students who wanted to get active duty did not get it," Nar- burgh said. Those who enter the Army Reserve Na- tional Guard and the U.S Army Reserve will still function as lieutenants, but they train with their unit only one weekend a month, with two weeks set aside for annual training.
