SPORTS The Michigan Daily Friday, May 20, 1988 Page 10 Blue blows title chance BY MIKE GREIFENBERG Entering the final weekend of Big Ten play with a two-and-a-half game lead over Minnesota, the Michigan women's softball team's hopes of a conference championship were bright. Following the weekend, the team found themselves with its sec- ond consecutive Big Ten second- place finish. Three one-run losses at fourth- place Indiana along with a four game sweep by Minnesota over Michigan State abruptly ended the Wolverines season. "Sometimes you finish just a lit- Al la r d tle bit short and that was the case," ...disappointed sophomore third basewoman Jenny Allard said. "I'm disappointed." "We had the opportunity in front of us but it just didn't happen," said junior catcher MaryAnn Daviera. On Friday, Michigan started quickly, jumping on Indiana in the first inning, as Daviera doubled with the bases loaded, scoring two runs. The Hoosiers, however, followed with two runs in their half of the inning to even the score. Indiana added another run in the third while Christy Brown shut down the Wolverines for the remainder of the contest to preserve the 3-2 Hoosier triumph. In the day's second game, Michi- gan woke up in the sixth inning, scoring four unearned runs to erase a 2-0 deficit on the way to a 5-2 vic- tory. First-year pitcher Andrea Nel- son tossed a four-hitter in winning her ninth Big Ten contest. Heading into Saturday, the Wolverines had to win just one game in order to clinch their first- ever conference title. The victory celebration never transpired. The opener featured a pitching duel between Indiana's Jill Jenson and the Wolverines Michelle Bolster. The game ended in the tenth inning when the Hoosiers manufactured the game's only run. Michigan threat- ened only once in the game, when Bolster doubled and was left stranded in the fifth. Her hit was one of only three allowed by Jenson. Michigan continued its offensive futility into the second game, get- ting only two hits in the 2-0 loss. One was an Allard home run in the fourth that provided the Wolverines with their only run of the day. One could feel the tension as Michigan put a runner on base in each of the final three innings, des- perately trying to salvage the season, only to end the game, the weekend, and the year unfulfilled. "It just wasn't meant to be," said Daviera. "We never gave up. We couldn't make the breaks. They all went their (Indiana's) way." Nelson ...lone winner May 1 Days Lease any apartment for $100.
