Lack of witnesses postpones rape trial By LISA BABCOCK The trial for Griffith Neal - accused of raping a 21-year-old University student during a Greek Week party at Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house - was postponed until September because the attor- neys claim they were unable to gather enough witnesses during the summer. Neal was to stand trial for first degree criminal sexual assault this week. Dennis Bila, a partner of Neal's attorney, said the Michigan Appeals Court postponed the trial because "the prosecution was lax in his duties and didn't seek out all of the witnesses." Neal is represented by Attorney Stephen Boak. "Whenever anybody tries to postpone a trial it's to buy time," said Julie Steiner, director of the University's Sexual Assault Pre- vention and Awareness Center. "It's important not only that this will take place around the time of sorority and fraternity rush, but that the trial will become more emo- tionally charged with all the students on campus." Since Neal pleaded not guilty, Steiner thinks that his attorneys will attempt to discredit and "blame the victim" during the trial. "I want to make sure that she gets as much support from the community as possible." Fraternity officials do not believe their chapter will shut down if Neal is found guilty. "If a member is convicted of a crime, we would not close the chapter just for that reason. We expect that our chapter will continue to operate in the fall," said Bill Martin, executive director of Phi Gamma Delta. But a Fiji chapter at Cornell University shut down at the end of last semester for problems including sexual abuse, said Cornell spokesman David Stewart.
