By SHEALA DURANT
The University Medical School's
Minority High School Student
Research Apprenticeship Program
gives minority high school students
the opportunity to participate in
biomedical research at the Univer -
sity every summer.
Accorording to Margaret Wood -
bury, assistant dean at the Office of
Student and. Minority Affairs
(OSAMA), the program "is an
excellent opportunity for students
to explore their potential interest in
medicine or biomedical research
with prominent investigators in the
field."
Woodbury said interest in the
program has been very strong from
everyone involved - OSAMA,
The Medical School, students, and
faculty. "The medical school has
made a substantial commitment to
provide minority students an oppor -
tunity for development," she said.

The seven-year-old program lasts
for approximately eight weeks, and
will run during July and August.
To fund the program, the Uni-
verisity matches the funds it
receives from the National Institute
of Health, which allows six stu -
dents to participate every year.
The students' activities will vary
from lab to lab, but all will have a
chance to collect and analyze data in
scientific or clinical research.
The program's participants will
come primarily from the Ann
Arbor-Ypsilanti area, although stu -
dents from Detroit and even Grand
Rapids have expressed interest.
OSAMA selects students who
have usually done well in high
school, said Woodbury.
She added that participants need
not be certain they want to pursue a
career in the health-related fields,
but must "express potential."
