Auerbach. "Even with that atrocious haircut of yours,
you simply are not weird-looking enough to play for
the Celtics! The boys will have nothing to do with it!"
"NO, NO," protested King. "I gave up on that
notion years ago. With people like Fred Roberts, Greg
Kite, Conner Henry, and that Bird guy, I figure you got
enough guys on your team who can't run or jump."
"Hey now, don't be making fun of our talent,"
roared Auerbach. "Heck, Fred Roberts can even dunk!"
"You don't say," exclaimed King. "Well, that's
beside the point. I was doing some thinking. If the

"World champions!" yelled Auerbach. "Now you're
talking! We've got no chance getting by the Lakers on
the court. You think we can get Magic in the ring?"
"Only if you're willing to let him and Bird go one
on one, said King. Silence at the other end. "What's
wrong?" demanded King.
Auerbach answered. "Bird's already signed with the
Red Sox. Did you see his fastball in game three?"
