Regents may give emeritus 'status to Prof. (Continued from Page 1) enables retired professors to use the University as a recommendation when requesting research grants. The status also entitles retired professors to use the library system and participate in social and ceremonial functions of the University. "The tradition has been that those decisions have been based upon purely academic criteria," said Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs Chair Harris McClamroch. "The judgments have been made by peers knowledgeable about the professor's teaching and research efforts." The Michigan Daily-Friday, May 29, 1987-Page 5 Museums receive grants By SUZANNE LEPINE For the third consecutive year, two Ann Arbor museums are the re - cipients of operating grants from the Institute of Museum Services. Announced this week by U.S. Rep. Carl Pursell (R-Ann Arbor), the Hands-On Museum will receive $25,235 and the University Art Museum will receive $72,667. As an independent agency within the National Foundation for the Arts and Humanities, IMS awards 400 operating grants a year, select - ing from a field of over 1200 mu - seums nationwide. Both Ann Arbor museums were awarded the full a - mount entitled to them, according to IMS rules -10 percent of the museum's operating costs the pre - vious year. Janet Torno, the art museum's administrative assistant, said the museum is grateful for the grant. "The funding is especially helpful because of our recent budget cuts," Torno said. The grant will help supplement their staff and provide for needed office equipment. Because these grants are awarded on a competitive basis, Cynthia Yao, director of the Hands-On Mu - seum, thinks they are very impor - tant to the museum. "This means a lot in the museum world. The grants are given on a grading system, and it says a lot for us."
