LANSING - The state Senate
Appropriations Committee unani -
mously approved a bill yesterday
that would give each of the state's
four research institutions - the
University, Michigan State Univer-
sity, Michigan Technological Uni -
veristy, and Wayne State University
- a 6.6 percent increase over last
year's funding.
Senator William Sederburg (R-
East Lansing), chair of the Higher
Education Appropriations Subcom -
mittee, presented the budget propo -
sal at meetings Wednesday and yest -
erday.
The Appropriations Committee
recommended a total appropriation
of $240.2 million for the Univer -
sity, about $500,000 less than the4
house's recommendation.
The total budget was one mil -
lion more than the House's, and
$20 million more than Governor
James Blanchard's recommendation.
"All the institutions are substan -
tial winners over what the governor
recommended," Sederburg said.
