Spartans
gain split;
haft Blue
win streak
By GREG MOLZON
Last weekend's baseball games
just go to prove that when
Michigan and Michigan State get
together, you can throw out the
records because anything can
happen.
The Wolverines entered the
series as the Big Ten East Division
champions and were riding a 22-
game winning streak, just three
wins away from a new school
record. The Spartans, who were 4-
10 in the Big Ten before the series,
ignored the Wolverines' press
clippings though, and blasted
Michigan in two of the four games.
"Michigan State just outplayed
us," Michigan head coach Bud
Middaugh said. "They played better
than us and deserved to win the two
games they won."
THE SPARTANS shocked
Michigan in the opener on Saturday
in East Lansing by slamming five
home runs and 21 hits in a 17-8
victory that ended the Wolverines'
winning streak at 22.
With a strong wind blowing out,
Spartan hitters Dan Masteller, Todd
Krumm, and Mike Davidson hit
consecutive homers in the first
inning off Mike Ignasiak. The-
Spartans jumped to a 14-0 lead by
the third inning and coasted to the
easy win.
James Durham led the
Wolverines with three hits, while
Darrin Campbell and Greg
McMurtry each added two.
In the second game, Ross
Powell improved his record to 6-0
by allowing only one run in six
innings as Michigan bounced back
to win 11-5. Steve Finken hit his
sixth home run of the season, Bill
St. Peter had three RBIs, and Chris

Michigan third baseman Rich Samplinski takes a throw from catcher Mike Gillette and tags out a Michigan State runner during action
against the Spartans last weekend.

Gagin had three hits.
BACK IN Ann Arbor on
Sunday, the Wolverines looked to
be back on the right track with a 2-
1 lead and Jim Abbott on the
mound in the sixth. However, the
Michigan State bats came alive in
the last two innings with seven
runs to give the Spartans an 8-2
win. It was only the second loss of
the year for Abbott, who dropped to
9-2.
In the final game of the series,
Mike Grimes combined with
Ignasiak to throw a two-hit shutout
in a 2-0 victory. Grimes went to 6-
0 with the win and Ignasiak
notched his fifth save.
