Nilte Owl expands service to spring, summer

Y4

By CATHERINE KIM
The University's administration
has extended the Nite Owl into the
spring and summer terms in accord -
ance with the University's plan for
expansion of the system. Although
the service was discontinued last
spring and summer, efforts of the-
campus safety committee and Sexu -
al Assault Awareness and Preven -
tion Center helped bring about the
Nite Owl's expansion.
Student use this year will largely
determine future operation of the
Nite Owl during the spring and
summer months. "It's still too ear -
ly to judge what that demand will
be because many students aren't
aware that the spring and summer
Nite Owl is operating," said Julie
Steiner, director of the center.
Steiner began working toward
Nite Owl's expansion when the
center was established in February
of 1986. The center and the campus
safety committee presented the ad -
ministration a proposal to expand
the Nite Owl last August.

Composed of a cross-section of
students and staff, the safety com -
mittee reports to Vice President for
Student Affairs Henry Johnson, Af -
firmative Action Director Virginia
Nordby, and Business Operations
Director Jack Wiedenbach.

safety.
"The Nite-Owl, the center, and
its activities are not answers to
campus safety in themselves, but
steps that must be taken to ensure
it," said Steiner.

Recent ridership and positive
student response are promising indi -
cators of the Nite Owl's future use
during the summer months. "The
Nite Owl has been extremely useful
to me all year," said LSA sophmore
Konika Patel. "Some areas could be
reduced, and some others expanded."

John Wood, a Nite-Owl driver
and LSA student, agrees. "At the
beginning of the term, the bus was
empty a lot," Wood said.
"But, as the term picked up and
tests came along, more people went
to the library, and more rode it. It's
a good service, though there are
areas that almost never are used," he
added.

'The Nite-Owl, the center, and its activities are not
answers to campus safety in themselves, but steps
that must be taken to ensure it,'
- Julie Steiner, Director of the Sexual Assault
Awareness and Prevention Center.

"When I got in office there was
only one bus, and the present route
was half the size," said Steiner.
"Although it took the committee
and I until August to complete our
proposal, it was fully approved
when we presented it to the admin -
istration."
Since the inception of the center,
Steiner feels the adminstration has
been cooperative with the majority
of its proposals to improve campus

"Money, as in any other case,
was an obstacle. But there were no
objections to the idea of a continued
Nite Owl itself," said Weidenbach.
The Nite Owl is only one of the
many accomplishments of the Cen -
ter. The Center has also sponsored a
national art exhibit on rape, and the
Safewalk service, in addition to
providing counseling and height -
ening public awareness of sexual
assault.
