Page 4 - The Michigan Doily - Friday, May 15, 1987 - Blanchard soon to fill 'U' regent vacancy By EDWARD KLEINE Special to the Daily LANSING - Govenor James Blanchard has narrowed his list of candidates to replace former Univer- sity Regent Sarah Power and could make his decision as early as today, according to Blanchard's Personnel Director Greg Morris. Morris said Blanchard is "shoot - ing for the end of May" to make his appoinment, but added that it could come at any time. "There could be one at the end of this week," he said. Although Morris declined to dis - cuss the names on Blanchard's list, sources at the capitol have indicated that former regents Jerry Dunn and Robert Nederlander, former Govern - ors William Milliken and Mennen Williams, Ypsilanti resident Marge Lansing, state official Robert Naft - aly, and Power's husband Philip are being considered for the post. Milliken and Williams are not likely candidates according to one source because Milliken is aRe- according to an anonymous source. Williams, 75, retired this year as the state's chief justice. All the candidates except Milli - ken are Democrats, and capitol in - siders are confident that Blanchard will appointa Democrat. Naftaly denied he is a candidate and speaking with Blanchard about the possible appointment. But even though some capitol watchers see Power as Blanchard's'W prime choice, they speculate that he may already have turned down the offer, since he has not announced any desire for the position.
