Wolverines surge to East title
Record in sight for Blue Batsmen
By GREG MOLZON
While the final grade has yet to
be determined, the baseball team
definitely received a high mark
during the final exam period - a
solid 'A'.
Coach Bud Middaugh's squad
captured the title of the Big Ten
East Division for the seventh
straight season, is ranked seventh in
the country by Baseball America,
and is currently on a 22-game
winning streak.
The Wolverines have not lost
since a 7-2 setback against Ferris
State on April 14 and could break
the Michigan record, of 24 straight
set in 1985, with three more
against Michigan State this
weekend.
MIDDAUGH downplayed the
importance of the record. "I didn't
even know there was a record," he
said.
"I'd like to think we're getting a
little bit better, but the streak has
no materialistic value to us at all."
The Wolverines clinched the
division title last weekend with a
four-game sweep of Indiana. On
Saturday, Michigan won two close
games over the visiting Hoosiers.
In the opener, Tom Brock hit a
home run to break a 1-1 deadlock
and give the Wolverines the 2-1
win.
In the second game, Michigan
was trailing 1-0 in the seventh
inning before it started a game-
winning rally. Greg McMurtry and.
Ed Woolwine each singled and Jim
Durham hit a triple to give the
Wolverines another 2-1 victory.
MIKE IGNASIAK was the
star on Sunday as he threw a one-
hit shutout and tallied 11
strikeouts. Ignasiak also notched a
save in the opening game of the
series and was named Big Ten
Player of the Week for his
performance on the weekend.
Michigan continued its streak
this week with doubleheader sweeps
of Wayne State and Western
Michigan. Jim Abbott improved
his record to 9-1 with a 2-1 victory
over Western Michigan.
Abbott, who has a 1.62 ERA,
was also invited this week to tryout
for the United States team that will
play in the Pan American Games.
Ross Powell had back-to-back
saves during the week and Phil
Price hit two home runs against the
Broncos to bring his season total to
seven. In his first season, Price also
leads the team in hitting with a
.397 batting average, while Brock
leads the team with eight home
runs.
By winning the conference's
East Division, the Wolverines
qualified for the Big Ten Playoffs
May 15-17, which will be held on
their home field at Ray Fisher
Stadium.
Purdue qualified as the second
place team from the East Division,
while the two representatives from
the West will be decided this
weekend. Minnesota and Iowa are
the favorites to advance to Ann
Arbor.

Michigan State will have a
chance to halt Michigan's 22-game
winning streak in a four-game
serie- his weekend.
The rivals will play Saturday in
East Lansing and return to Ann 4
Arbor on Sunday.
Although Michigan State is
only 4-8 in the Big Ten, 31-16
overall, the Spartans had won 12

action.
"I know that they are very
talented," said Michigan coach Bud
Middaugh, "I'm shocked they
haven't had a better year than they
have," 4
The Spartans' top pitchers are
Todd Krumm (4-1), Mark Piazza (4-
