The Michigan Daily, Friday, August 7, 1987-Page 13 Books. Little Heroes Norman Spinrad $18.95/hardcover Bantam 488 pp. Welcome to the near future where cities are split into good zones - protected by "zonies" packing Uzis - and dangerous sectors where streeties wander. Drugs are passe, This is the United States Norman Spinrad envisions in his latest novel, Little Heroes. The plot first centers on MUZIK, a musical monopoly where no real musicians exist. Voices are mixed in a VoxBox and the persona is invented by a computer. Likewise, the government threatens to create a society where thinking individuals are a thing of the past. Enter the Reality Liberation Frn ahnof ro bo,~n r ~ the "official false reality" that MUZIK and the government represent. The RLF yearn to go back to the days when rock was rock, reality was reality, and times were better. In Little Heroes, Spinrad effectively uses his characters to show this clash between false and real reality. Each of his main characters become one of MUZIK's creations when plugged into wire. an RLF member while he is Mucho Muchacho, "the max in streetwise macho." Sally Genaro, whiz kid of the VoxBox, is "Cyborg Sally, Queen of Heat, every man's desire." Finally, Bobby Rubin, image- maker of MUZIK, becomes his own creation, Red Jack, who will, as his song says, lead the country to "red ripe anarchy for all the world to see." Sninr d'c rnfrec d nr believable. His slick style captures the tone of the novel but at times can be overbearing. Dialogue and songs come so fast and furious that the reader is often left in their wake. Spinrad's attempt to pack so much action into Little Heroes almost leads to its demise, but, thankfully, his characters save the day. It's worth the effort to heir the final song. so electronic highs ( wire ) are rront, a banau o re Wes wno are out '-p"" au s conusea worlds i-Lisa Magnino where it's at. to rid the country of what they term Streetie Paco Monaco becomes unsettling and almost t o o Records (Continued from Page12)s cover in Sunday Mornings ingredients of rock music into a big chords all night."
