To Breast-feed or Not to Breast-feed, That is the Question

or some new parents, the an-
swer is obvious. For others, it is
a difficult decision. But for all new
parents, a decision to breast-feed is
one that will affect their lifestyle.
Catherine McAuley Health Cen-
ter is offering a new class to help ex-
pectant parents decide whether or
not breast-feeding is the best choice
for them. The class meets in the Edu-
cation Center on the Health Center's

Huron River Drive campus (check the
Community Calendar for dates) and
is taught by registered nurses.
According to Pat Rutowski, director
of Maternal/Child Nursing at St.
Joseph Mercy Hospital, the class ex-
amines how breast-feeding impacts
on lifestyle rather than how to breast-
feed.
"Breast-feeding is truly a family
affair," Rutowski says. "We give infor-

mation to the whole family, we show
them films and tell them what books
to read. We support breast-feeding
but we don't force it on anyone or
suggest that it's right for everyone.
Forcing it doesn't make it right."
Because this new class has been
so well received, pre-registration is
necessary For more information on
the breast-feeding class or to pre-
register, please call 572-3675. e
