Junior Todd Steverson crushed the school's oldest record - set by assistant coach Kent Bernard in 1964 with a 45.47 in the 400-meter dash. Steverson's time, a Dyche Stadium record, was just 0.15 seconds short of Eliot Tabron's (Michigan State) Big Ten record set in 1982. IN THE TRIPLE jump, Wolverine Butch Starmack's 50'9%" broke another school record. Indiana's Larry Streeter won the event with a 52'7 ". Cory Gates of Wisconsin r placed second. Steverson, Omar Davidson, Senior Bob Boynton and Junior Rick Swilley broke Michigan's other record in the mile-relay. The foursome's 3:05.73 was second behind Indiana's 3:04.45 and qualified them for the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 1. Michigan's fourth-place finish was expected, according to head coach Jack Harvey. "We ran really well, but we figured we'd be fourth," Harvey said. "We thought if Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin (third, first and second, respectively) didn't do that well, we could finish higher." What the Wolverines lack is a shot- putter, pole vaulter and competitors for the 100- and 200-meter dashes. But despite its missing links, Michigan sported several impressive performances over the weekend. Sophomore Joe Schmidt secured second in the 3,000-meter steeple chase at 9:06.6. Illinois' Mike Patton took first just 0:04 ahead of Schmidt. Boynton's 1:50.44 in the 800-meters carried third place. Darren Kern of Indiana captured first with a 1:50.09. SENIOR CHRIS Fitzpatrick, a Muskegon native, placed third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Hoosier Jon Thomas won first with a 48.95, a Big Ten and Dyche Stadium record and NCAA qualifying time. Distance man Chris Brewster, a junior, finished third in the 5,000- meter run while senior Dave Meyer grabbed sixth. Meyer equalled his 5,000-meter finish in the 10,000-meters at 29:21.09. Wisconsin's John Easker took first with a Big Ten- and stadium- record 28:45.25. Vince Bean's 24'4%" in the long jump and Thomas Wilcher's 0:14.59 in the 110-meter high hurdles were not the solid marks Harvey expected from his veterans. "They were the only two disappointments," said Har- vey. Sophomore Scott Crawford -tied Purdue's Mike Burns for sixth in the high jump with a 6'8%". Indiana's 4 Scott Reed led all jumpers at 7'1%". Middle-distancer Ron Simpson finished in the middle of the pack at 3:49.64 in the 1,500-meters. Former quarterback Dave Hall placed ninth in a field of 20 in the discus throw. Wolverine Mike Krauss was sixth at 169'4". Michigan placed sixth in the 400-meter relay. In women's competition, the Wolverines finished a disappointing eighth with 39 points. Wisconsin was crowned Big Ten champion, com- piling 138 points. Junior Sue Schroeder's 9:30.35 in the 3,000-meter run and 16:33.20 in the 5,000-meter were good enough for second. Joyce Wilson and Cathy Schmidt also took second in the 400 and 1,500, respec- tively. Wilson's 52.53 oualified her for the NCAAs. Angie Hafner, a junior, tied for second in the high jump at 5'10%", a new Dyche Stadium record. 1' I.
