Gibson nailed on elbow

MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) - Detroit
Tiger outfielder Kirk Gibson suffered
a severe bruise on his right arm when
he was struck above the right elbow
by a pitch from Minnesota's Mike
Smithson, last night.
Gibson was hit in the first inning of
the Tigers game against the Twins but
stayed in the game, stealing second
for his 16th stolen base of the season,
and then scoring on Darrell Evans'
single.
He was then taken to Metropolitan
' Medical Center across the street from

the Metrodome for X-rays. A Tiger of-
ficial said the ball had left an imprint
of its stitching on Gibson's arm.
Dr. Leonard Michienzi, Twins team
physician, said there was no fracture
and that Gibson would be sidelined
today because of the bruise but might
be able to pinch hit tomorrow.
The burly outfielder entered the
game hitting .295 with 19 home runs.
The Twins were leading the Tigers
last night, 6-3, after 7 innings. Min-
nesota's Kirby Puckett put his team in
the lead, 3-2, with a two-run triple in

the fourth inning. Tom Brunansky hit
a run-scoring triple in the seventh and
later scored to make it 6-3. All Min-
nesota's runs came off Detroit starter
Walt Terrell.
Detroit broke for two runs in the fir-
st inning off starter Mike Smithson.
Lou Whitaker's lead-off double and
Evans' single were the key blows.
With Detroit down, 4-2, in the seven-
th, Evans clubbed a homer to center
that just eluded a leaping Puckett. It
was Evans' 20th homer of the year,
moving him one ahead of Gibson for
