Seaver, in search of his 297th career victory, had only given up two hits and three base runners until Brookens doubled sharply to left with two out in the eighth. WHITAKER then blooped a 3-1 pit- ch into short center out of the reach of center fielder Rudy Law, shortstop Ozzie Guillen and second baseman Julio Cruz to score Brookens with the game's lone run. Seaver is now 8-7. Morris raised his record to 10-6 with a five-hitter in which he walked four and struck out nine. It was his fourth shutout of the season. Chicago got two runners as far as third. In the third, Guillen drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and went to third when Law grounded out to first. But Bryan Little popped to short for the third out. PINCH-HITTER Carlton Fisk walked with two out in the eighth and moved to third when Harold Baines grounded a single up the middle. But Greg Walker struck out to end the in- ning, which started when Jerry Hair- ston pinch-hit a single and pinch-run- ner Cruz was thrown out trying to steal ona pitchout. Detroit only put one runner in scoring position until the eighth and that was in the second when Lance Parrish singled with two out and Darrell Evans was hit by a pitch. SPORTS OF THE DAILY: 'M's'Henderson stars 4 By DAN COVEN Tuesday night at the Sander's Summer League was a classic exam- ple of age and experience overcoming youth and talent. Led by Michigan senior Robert Henderson and CBA veteran Herb Brooks, Franklin Wright came from behind to beata young and previously unbeaten First Martin Team. Brooks hit the winning shot, a fall-away jum- per, with four seconds left. J.P. Oosterban's 30-foot jumper for First Martin bounced off the rim at the buz- zer. First Martin had led by as many as 14 before Franklin Wright rallied behind Brooks' scoring and Hender- son's rebounding. Brooks led all scorers with 21 and Henderson tallied 10 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. The game was of special interest to the 250 fans on hand because it was a showcase for Michigan's young talent. Quarterbacked by sophomore point-guard Gary Grant, First Martin features all of Michigan's freshmen recruits - save Mike Griffin who is home nursing a sore ankle. While highly-touted Glen Rice and Billy But- ts were absent last night, the fresh- men that did play all showed flashes of brilliance. While all of the freshmen displayed fine outside shooting ability, Loy Vought was the most impressive of the group Tuesday night. Packing an unstoppable jump shot and excellent leaping ability, the 6'9" forward from East Kenwood scored 14 points and hauled down six rebounds. The 6'10" Oosterban scored 10 points and for- ward Mark Hughes added eight. First Martin, Franklin Wright, and played July 16 at Hubert H. Hum- phrey Stadium in Minneapolis, are repeaters from the 1984 squad. They are catcher Gary Carter, first baseman Steve Garvey, shortstop Oz-, zie Smith, and outfielders Dale Mur- phy, Tony Gwynn and Darryl Strawberry.
