Alex Sanchez's fourth homerun of the year broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning. The four bagger came off of Seattle starter and loser Mark Langston. Morris got stronger as the game progressed after allowing single runs in the first and third innings. Things didn't start out very well for the Detroit ace however. Leadoff bat- ter Jack Perconte bunted to start the game and third baseman Tom Brookens threw wildly to first allowing Perconte to advance to third. Sanchez, the right fielder, then com- mitted the 2nd error on the play as he threw the ball past Brookens, allowing Perconte to scamper home. The Tigers quickly struck back in their half of the inning as Barbaro Garbey's bases loaded single brought across two runs. Alan Trammel, who had singled, and Kirk Gibson, who had doubled, both scored. Seattle's Phil Bradley knotted the score in the third as he homered off the facing of the upper deck in left center field. After Sanchez's blast broke the tie, the Tigers added two more runs. A Trammell double scoring Lou Whitaker, who had walked, tallied a run in the fifth. In the sixth, Brookens atoned for his earlier miscue with his first homerun of the 1985 campaign. 4 Brookens ... atones for error 4 Hats off Associated Press Lloyd Moseby of the Toronto Blue Jays slides in past the tag of the Minnesota Twins Greg Gagne for his 15th stolen base of the year. SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Lendl, Conj semifinals PARIS (UPI) - Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors each defeated young opponents in straight sets yesterday to set up a semifinal meeting in the French Open tennis championships. Lendl, the second seed, and defen- ding champion, wore down unseeded Martin Jaite of Argentina in unin- spiring fashion, taking 2 hours and 44 minutes for a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory. THIRD-seeded Connors had to con- tend with a 55-minute rain break - the first of the Championships - at5-5 in the third set. But when play resumed he took only 11 minutes more to dispatch 19-year-old Stefan Edberg of Sweden, the 14th seed, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Lendl showed patience with Jaite's baseline game, waiting for the 20- year-old to make mistakes. Connors was equally cunning in countering the serve and volley style of Edberg. "I played some very tight, good solid tennis," Connors said after reaching his fourth semifinal at the French Open, the only Grand Slam tournament he has never won. "Rain delays are difficult, but today worked for me. I kinda didn't feel like coming back and playing but I won the match."
