SPORTS Tuesday, June 4, 1985 4 Page 8 The Michigan Daily Larkin, Watters taken in draft 4 By ADAM MARTIN Riding two tremendous seasons, Michigan baseball's Barry Larkin and Mike Watters were taken in the first and second rounds of Major League Baseball's amateur draft yesterday. Larkin, a junior, was taken by his hometown Cincinnatti Reds as the fourth player in the country to be drafted. Outfielder-second baseman Watters, a .417 hitter on the year, was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round, 31st overall. BOTH WOLVERINES said they will not make a decision on their future until they meet with their prospective teams and are presented with an of- fer. Larkin and Watters also said get- ting degrees from Michigan would figure heavily in their decisions. "If we're (Larkin and the Reds) talking contracts," Larkin said, "I'll work out something where I can come back (to Michigan) in September and get the rest of my credits." "I've got all my options open," said Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Watters, who will meet with the during the last three years, but will Dodgers Thursday. "I'm gonna sit and talk with them, I'm real anxious to talk." LARKIN SAID he wasn't leaning S 1 o I ers toward any particular decision, but added getting to the major leagues is fo i evPQ one of his goals. Lot "I would just love playing in front of all my friends," he commented. Watters, however, felt his phenomenal season illustrated his full potential. "I felt I was playing finally like I knew I could," he said. Watters added he felt his season affected his position in the draft, but not his actual drafting. Michigan coach Bud Middaugh ex- pressed his concern for his players' future. "I'm just real happy for the kids and I hope in the negotiations, things work out well for them." AS TWO OF his premier players, Middaugh said he would be thrilled to see Larkin and Watters finish their careers at Michigan and get their degrees. 4 "I think he's ready to go out and play professional baseball," said Middaugh about his shbrtstop, "but I'd like for him to consider finishing his degree." Middaugh added Watters would have a secure spot in the Wolverine lineup if he returns next season. "It's gonna be a tough decision, but if Mike does come back, he'll play second next year." Watters said his decision would rest also on the Dodger organization and its personnel. "I'm gonna see who they have in front of me and where they might play me, and the money, of course."
