Ishikawa, a freshman pit- cher from California singlehandedly guided North- western to the 1984 Big Ten crown by registering an unvelievable 29-4 season mark and a national record 386 strike outs. Friday and yesterday the Michigan women's team got its first taste of the phenom as they visited Nor- thwestern for a pair of doubleheaders. Although unable to overcome Ishikawa, the Wolverines con- tinued to play sound softball by splitting both twin- bills with the Wildcats. IN FRIDAY'S first game, Ishikawa fanned 11 of the first 13 Wolverine batters and 16 for the game as Northwestern clinched the conference title with a 2-1 victory. Vicki Morrow pitched well for Michigan, fanning seven Wildcats. The Wolverines came back in the second game behind freshman Julie Clark's four-hit shutout to triumph, 3-0. Clark finished the season with an 8-2 record. Fellow freshman Alicia Seegert had the game-winning hit in the first inning. In yesterday's first game Ishikawa recorded another 12 strikeouts as Northwestern romped, 9-2. Seegert recorded Michigan's lone highlight by hitting a 200-foot homer to lead off the contest. BUT ONCE again the Wolverines came back as yet another freshman, Mari Foster, increased her record to 8-2. Seegert's fourth home run of the campaign sparked the 5-4 victory. Seegert's fourth homer gave her another Wolverine season record. Last week, she set new records fqr most doubles and RBI's ina single season. Michigan coach Bob DeCarolis, who is stepping down after four years at the helm, was pleased to end the season on a winning note. The Wolverines finished the '84 season 32-24, 12-12 in Big Ten play. The 32 vic- tories ties the record for most softball victories in a season. Northwestern heads on to the NCAA World Series of women's softball. 0 SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Larsen pnishes fourth f., f in marathon trials A From wire service reports OLYMPIA, Wash. - Former Michigan running standout Lisa Larsen held a spot on the Olympic marathon team for 25 miles but couldn't hold off Julie Ishpording in the closing stages of the race and had to settle for fourth in the women's marathon trials held yesterday. Joan Benoit won the race easily with a time of 2:31:04 and will join second place finisher Julie Brown and Ishpor- ding on the U.S. team in the first ever women's marathon held in the Olym- pics. Larsen held third place for most of the afternoon and held off a challenge by 16-year-old Cathy Shiro late in the race, but was passed by Ishpording with just over a mile to go. The Battle Creek native, who will be the first alternate for the U.S. team in Los Angeles, was a two-time All- America in cross country for Michigan but bypassed her final season of eligibility last fall to concentrate on the marathon. Women tracksters break records Special to the Daily TOLEDO - Two athletes set school records and two qualified for the NCAA track meet yesterday for Michigan as the women's track team warmed up for next week's Big Ten meet at the Toledo Invitational. Melody Middleton broke her own school record in the hextathlon with 5,834 points, but fell 16 points short of qualifying for the NCAA's. Sophomore high jumper Angie Hafner also broke the Michigan record with a leap of 6-/4 and this mark will put her not only in the NCAA's, but in the Olympic trials as well. Sue Schroeder-made national time as well in the 1500 meters. Other firsts for the Wolverines came from Martha Gray in the 800 meters and by the 4x400-meter relay team. (AP) - Clark Gillies scored three goals and Bryan Trottier added two as the Islanders' battle-tested veterans paced New York to a 6-1 victory .over the Edmonton Oilers last night to even the Stanley cup finals at one victory each. Facing the possibility of a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven' National Hockey League championship series which now switches to Edmonton for the next three games starting Tuesday - the Islanders were relentless from the opening faceoff. (AP) - Bob McAdoo scored 12 of his 20 points in the final quarter yesterday as the Los Angeles Lakers downed the Phoenix Suns 110-94 in the opening game of the National Basketball Association Western Conference finals. The second game of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night at the Forum, then the clubs switch to Phoenix for the third and fourth games on Friday and Sunday.
