"I don't like the idea at all," wrote Harvard sociologist Daniel Bell. "It is spurious and would only produce ersatz culture." He said students should not be taught individual great works, but rather "how books or themes relate to one another or speak to one another." Robert Penn Warren, the novelist, wrote that better-educated teachers, not a better curriculum, are needed. "If I am to judge from members of school boards that I have known," Warren said, "I should doubt that one man out of a hundred has read, in a generation if ever, any of the titles mentioned" in his list, which included the Book of Genesis, Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species and Theodore Dreisler's an American Tragedy. ssociated Press And Henry Steele Commager, the Amherst College historian, said he wasn't persuaded of any correlation didhood home between particular readings and in- Welsh mining telligence. ot his humble "Modern political scientists read 10 did not attend times as many books, etc. of gover- nment and politics as did Madison and Hamilton, but they can't write the Federalist Papers," Commager said. Now they're merely marketing ploys for film promotion, filled with pop songs that, if they get any airplay, become quite effective and very cheap advertising. "I had sung 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone' as part of a medley of other short songs for about a year, and then stopped singing it," Seeger recalled recently from his Beacon, N.Y., home. "One of the young people heard it and added three verses about soldiers and graves. "My manager said, 'Pete, didn't you write that song?' and I said 'Yeah, about three years ago.' He said, 'Did you ever copyright it?' and I said, 'No, I guess I didn't.' He said, 'Well, you ought to: the Kingston Trio has recor- ded it.' "Well, I got in touch with them and they were very nice and said, 'Oh Pete, we didn't know that was your song. Sure, we'll take our name off of it.' I've been pleasantly surprised at how that song has kept on goin' around the world," he said. of pure corporate marketing strategy, as bad and off the mark as the film. Unable to secure the rights to the Bruce Springsteen song which he named the film after, Hill enlisted style clone Jim Steinman (of Meatloaf fame) to come up with a couple of loud Springsteenian anthems for the film's opening and closing songs.
