According to coach Ollie Owens, it was the women's tennis
team's best showing ever at a Big Ten tournament.
Despite finishing third at last weekend's Big Ten cham-
pionships at Minnesota for the second time in three years,
Michigan came within one match of defeating defending
champion Indiana in the semi-finals. Indiana won the team
match, 5-4, but in the past the Wolverines had always been
easily beaten by both the Hoosiers and Northwestern, the
conference's two dominant teams.
Indiana went on to defeat the Wildcats in the finals, 5-4 to
capture their sixth consecutive league title. While Michigan
easily triumphed over fifth-seeded Minnesota for third place.

The Wolverines had defeated sixth-seeded Purdue in the first
round, 8-S.
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS also proved to be another
highlight for Michigan's top player, senior Mary Mac-
Taggart, MacTaggart did not lose a single match - in either
singles or doubles, and defeated Indiana's number one
player, Tracy Hoffman for the third time this year.
MacTaggert's fine overall record of 24-7, 13-1 in league play
was good enoughto qualify her for the NCAA tournament to
be held May 13-20 at UCLA. She competed in the NCAA tot r-
nament two years ago as a sophomore but lost in the fi -st
round.
