q SPORTS Friday, August 3, 1984 Page 16 The Michigan Daily Fraser may hit gold twice (Continued from Page 1) properly train for these '84 Summer Olympic Games. "Frankly speaking, I knew Steve would do this (win the gold medal) in February of this year. Nothing would get in his way. He was fanatical in his quest to win the gold," said Minick, who trained early every morning with Fraser for two and a half years. Minick and Fraser have delevoped a close friendship as a result of the early morning sessions. "I look at him as my fourth son. He's a totally exceptional individual," said Minick. Minick's confidence in his friend was well founded as Fraser easily won the United States Olympic Trials last spring and literally bulldozed his way to Olympic gold in Los Angeles. Wrestling in the 90-kilogram (198 pounds) weight class, the 26-year-old Fraser drew a bye in the first round of his tournament. He then beat Karolj Kopas of Yugoslavia, pinned Garry Kallos of Canada and whipped Swedish, sex symbol, national hero and former three-time World Champion, Frank Andersson. In the semi finals he beat George Pozidis of Greece which assured him of making history as the first American EVER to wina medal in Greco-Roman wrestling which is a style of wrestling contested entirely above the waist and in the past, an event dominated by European wrestlers. Fraser capturedthe gold ina thrilling final over Ilie Matei of Romania. He tied Matei at 1-1 with only 39 seconds remaining in the match which is where the match ended, but in Olympic rules the last wrestler to score points in a tie is declared the winner. So Fraser will return to Ann Arbor a true national hero. And whether he joins pizza king Monaghan or opts for a career in coaching or law infor- cement, one thing is for sure. Fraser is a winner. Morris back; Tigers win, 2-1 By KAREN TENSA Special to the Daily DETROIT - A two-run homer run by Lou Whitaker yesterday was all Jack Morris needed to record his 14th victory and join teammate Dan Petry as the league's winningest pitcher. Whitaker led the Tigers to the 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians in a rare weekday afternoon game at Tiger. Stadium. ALTHOUGH MORRIS gave up only one run, in eight innings, the early frames weren't exactly smooth sailing. Morris allowed two hits in the first and a triple in the third which tavelled all the way to the 400-foot mark in center field past centerfielder Chet Lemon. He escaped damage both times. Indian designated hitter Andre Thor- nton opened the scoring in the fourth with a homer to left center field - his 23rd of the season. Dave Bergman led off the Tiger fifth with a single to right field off Cleveland starting pitcher Bert Blyleven. Two 'outs later, Whitaker hit a home run idown the right field line into the lower decks. IN EIGHT innings Morris gave up'; seven hits, walked none and struck outl one batter. Willie Hernandez chalked up his 22nd save, mopping up the ninth, giving up only one base hit. The Tigers also threatened in the seventh, cl)asing Blyleven from the game and going through two relief pit- chers. But with the bases loaded and two out, Lance Parrish hit a chopped ground ball to pitcher Tom Waddell to end the inning. 0 Associated Press Lance Parrish slides into Cleveland shortstop Julio Franco to prevent a double play in the fourth inning of yesterday's 2-1 Detroit victory at Tiger Stadium. 0 Witaker ... blasts game-winner
