New mail to complete
Union's ground floor

The seemingly endless construction
on the ground floor of the Michigan
Union is finally nearing completion as
the Union accepts bids for the seven to
10 retail spaces available on the ground
floor.
The new shopping mall will recreate
the building's original 1916 interior
which was obscured by later additions
to the building said Union Director
Frank Cianciola. The ornate bay win-
dows which once surrounded the Union
had been covered over by the
renovations done in the early 1960's.
"We are still reviewing proposals,
but the retailers will represent a good

mix of merchants oriented to the
students using the Union," Cianciola
said. "The ground floor will serve the
entire community, but it's aimed
specifically at the students."
Ciancola said he hopes to attract such
services as banking, travel and
photocopying to the shopping mall.
Priority will be given to local merchan-
ts from the South University and State
Street business districts who offer
unique services to the university com-
munity.
"To the merchants advantage is the
concentration of people in a small area
during the business day," said Cian-
ciola, "especially the large numbers of
students using the Union from both
South and West Quad."
Cianciola noted that many schools
sponsor some types of commercial
areas, but he said the Union's is the
most ambitious project of its kind.
Construction is also complete on a
new entrance to the ground floor behind
West Quad which will increase ac-
cesibility-of the handicapped to the new
businesses. The mall will also become
the main entrance to the Union com-
puting center.
The mall's tenants will be announced
within four weeks, and the entire
ground floor is slated for completion by
the time fall term begins in September.

report says

BUT THE University has succeeded
at keeping its salaries above those at
other public universities, according to
the report.
"Salary and compensation levels of
full professors at Michigan rose more
rapidly during 1983-84 than did those at
other public institutitons, but the rate of
increase was matched by several of the
private schools, and Harvard salaries
grew by almost double the rate at
Michigan," the report said.
The University must also offer com-
petitive salaries if it wishes to attract
top-notch junior faculty members, the
report said.
When salaries slip, junior faculty
members shy away from jobs at the
University and head for schools which
offer more lucrative contracts, Gross
said. And when high quality faculty
members aren't attracted to the
University, neither are top-notch
students, he said, adding that faculty
members want to work with good
faculty members and students.
