SOLBERG'S HOMERS BUMP BLUE:
Gophers garner softball sweep

Barb Solberg, the senior leftfielder for the Min-
nesota Gopher women's softball team has been
struggling at the plate all year long. Entering yester-
day's doubleheader against Michigan at the Varsity
Softball Diamond Solberg's batting average was
below .200.
But something about Wolverine pitching turned the
Aberdeen, Md. native into a mini-Babe Ruth as she
slugged her first two home runs of the season and
drove in all but one of Minnesota's runs as the
Gophers swept the Wolverines, 4-3 andl3-0.
IN THE FIRST game, after Michigan had scored
one run in the second inning on two singles, Solberg
took Wolverine freshman Vicki Morrow (6-8) down-
town with a solo shot in the top of the fourth to tie the
game at one.

The Wolverines retaliated by scoring one run in
both the fourth and fifth innings to take what ap-
peared to be a commanding, 3-1 lead as Morrow was
having little difficulty in setting down the Gophers.
But when Carla Cray and Judy Oliverius hit back-
to-back singles to open the top of the sixth with
Solberg coming to bat, Michigan coach Bob
DeCarolis considered making the pitching change. He
elected to stay with Morrow, however, who worked
Solberg to a 3-2 count before delivering the game-
losing fastball. Solberg crushed the offering to the
exact same spot as her first homer. The three-run
shot made the score 4-3 in favor of the Gophers.
MINNESOTA RELIEF pitcher Tamara Seifert,
who entered the game in the fifth inning, had no
trouble in setting down the Wolverines over the final
two frames to pick up her sixth win against two

defeats.
The Gophers needed no relief help in the second
game as Judy Oliverius (5-3) switched from first base
to pitch a four-hit shutout. "She didn't have over-
powering stuff," said DeCarolis, "but she was
making the right pitches to get our batters out."
Minnesota scored its first run in the second inning
on a triple and sacrifice fly. Then added two insuran-
ce runs in the fifth when with two outs and two run-
ners aboard, slugger Solberg cleared the bases with a
double. Julie Clark suffered only her second loss of
the season against seven victories.
The sweep dropped Michigan's record in conferen-
ce play to 6-10, 25-21 overall. Minnesota is in second
place in the Big Ten behind Northwestern. The
Gophers are 12-4, 26-15 overall. The two teams square,
off in another doubleheader today, starting at 1:00
p.m.
