The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, July 17, 1984 -Page 15 BASEBALL ROUNDUP Padres CHICAGO (UPI) - Bobby Brown hit a two-run homer to back the combined four-hit oitching of Mark Thurmond and Rich Gossage yesterday and lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-0 triumph over the Chicago Cubs. Thurmond, 6-5, allowed all four hits, walked two and struck out three before Gossage came on with one on and none out in the ninth. Gossage registered the final three outs, two on strikeouts, to help the Western Division leading Padres improve to 52-36. It is the best record in the club's history. THE LOSS was only the third for the Cubs in their last 11 games. Chicago starter Dick Ruthven, 2-6, made his first appearance since May 17. Ruthven went on the disabled list May 23 when he underwent surgery for an ailing right shoulder. The Padres jumped on Ruthven for two runs in the second when Terry Kennedy hit a one-out single and scored ahead of Brown's second homer of the season. SAN DIEGO picked up another run in the third inning after Alan Wiggins walked with one out. Wiggins stole second but help up at third on Tony Gwynn's sharp single to right. Gwynn, apparently thinking 'Wiggins would try to score, got caught in a rundown between first and second, but the alert Wiggins raced home to make it 3-0. The Padres added their final run in the ninth. Luis Salazar, who had replaced Brown for defensive purposes in the eighth inning, hit a one-out single off George Frazier and stole second. Salazar took third on an infield out and Garry Templeton was intentionally walked, Thurmond then singled up the middle to score Salazar. Phillies 7, Reds 2 CINCINNATI (AP)..- Mike Schmidt and Garry Maddox, each with three hits including two-run homers, led the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-2 rout over the Cincinnati Reds Monday night. Kevin Gross, 5-4, went the distance for the Phillies for the first time this season, allowing seven hits, walking two and striking out three. CINCINNATI opened the scoring in the first inning when Eric Davis and Dan Driessen drew walks. After two outs, Davis scored on a single by Dave Concepcion, who had three hits. The. Phillies tied the game in the fourth when Schmidt singled, went to third on Tim Corcoran's single and scored when Ozzie Virgil grounded into a double play. Philadelphia blew the game open in the fifth inning; exploding for four runs, two on Maddox's fifth homer of the season. Von Hayes followed with a single and scored on a triple by Juan Samuel. Expos 3, Braves 1 MONTREAL (AP) - Dan Schatzeder gave up four hits in eigh-plus innings while Andre Dawson and Mike Stenhouse delivered run-scoring doubles last night to help the Montreal Expos defeat the Atlanta Braves 3-1. Schatzeder, 4-2, normally a middle reliever, has made three starts this season and has won all of them. The left-hander, who struck out seven, gave up three hits through eight innings and left after yielding Claudell Washington's leadoff double in the ninth. Bob James got the final three outs for his fifth save. The Expos scored off Rick Camp, 4-2, in the third inning after Derrel Thomas led off with a walk. Doug Flynn's infield single moved him to second and both runners advanced on Schatzeder's sacrifice. Tim Raines' groundout drove in the first run. Pirates 4, Dodgers 1 PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bob Walk, activated earlier in the day, gave up just five hits before injuring himself in the ninth inning last night as he earned his first major-league victory in two seasons while the Pittsburgh Pirates extended their winning streak to seven games with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. - Dale Berra and Jim Morrison cracked solo home runs for the Pirates.
