the 1984 baseball national champion- Head coach Cliff Gustafson and his
ship. The four are Texas, Arizona State, defending champion Texas Longhorns
Oklahoma State and Cal State- faced the biggest obstacle in their path
to a second consecutive title last night.
Texas played top-ranked Arizona State,
the only other unbeaten team in the
tournament. In their two CWS games
the Sun Devils have scored 32 runs.
AFTER MICHIGAN was eliminated
by New Orleans, head coach Bud Mid-
daugh was asked who he thought the
team to beat was. He was somewhat
less than informative with his reply.
"I think there's one club out here that
has much more talent than any of the
others," said Middaugh. "But I'm not
in a position to say which one right
now."
A few hours later, away from the
nagging press, Middaugh revealed that
he had referred to Arizona State.
Michigan outfielder Chuck Froning
agreed with his skipper's assessment.
"They're tough, they have some good
pitchers," said Froning, one of four
Gustafson graduating seniors. "They have a few
... shooting for fourth title guys that can really throw smoke."
