"I'm thrilled," exclaimed Van De Wege, who is officially listed as the "in- terim" head coach. "It's a great oppor- tunity at this stage of my life. Just to be a head coach at Michigan, with the kind of athletic program there is, the poten- tial to do great things is here. We have a lot of good (women's basketball) players. I think the prospects for the future are very bright." Van De Wege believes the philosophy year mark of 66-120, with only one win- ning campaign and just eight victories over the past two seasons. "I'm very proud of how far the Michigan program has come," said Soluk. "I'm proud of my accomplish- ments, of who I am and of what I am, but after seven year's of coaching at Michigan I have to do what's best for me and my family. "The recruiting process has become a grind. The days go from 8:15 a.m. un- til nine at night. Spending time with my husband and family is very important to me." SOLUK'S DEFENDERS point out that the Michigan athletic department it quits never gave Soluk adequate support. But Soluk refused to criticize the athletic department. "I have really good feelings about the university. I'm not going to say anything negative because that would sound like I am making ex- cuses," she said. Soluk has been Michigan's only women's basketball coach since the sport achieved varsity status seven years ago. She arrived in Ann Arbor having won two state championships with St. Ladislaus High in Hamtramck and having "turned the program around at Wayne St." But her reign at Michigan has been frought with con- troversy. Parents and players alike have voiced numerous complaints about Soluk's strategy and treatement. Several key players have transferred away, citing Soluk as a reason. Accor- ding to Mazer and Soluk, Athletic Director Canham was very supportive of Soluk and tried to give her every op- portunity to build a winning program. Ojeda, outdueling Detroit ace Jack Morris, pitched his first complete came shutout yesterday afternoon as the Boston Red Sox earned a 1-0 victory over the Tigers. AN EIGHTH-inning home run by Dwight Evans proved to be all the offense Ojeda needed. "You can't explain this stuff," Ojeda said. "You just go with it. Everybody was pumped up when we came into Detroit and we all wanted to win. This is fun. We needed this kind of series." It was the second successive defeat for the Tigers, now 19-4 and marked the first time this season Detroit has lost two games in a row. It was the first loss for Morris, who had won five straight. "It's guys like Ojeda who can mess us up," said Morris, who pitched despite a severe cold. "I've seen it over the years, guys like him - and Chicago's LaMarr Hoyt - who have good off-speed stuff and can get it over the black like he did today." OJEDA, 2-2, allowed six hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters while walking three. Morris allowed only five hits, struck out eight and walked three. Evans, who had belted a two-run homer in Wednesday night's 5-4 Boston triumph, led off the eighth inning by lining Morris' first pitch into the lower left field seats for his third homer of the season. First place in the Big Ten East is also on the line. The Wolverines are currently per- ched atop the division with a 6-2 mark. The Spartans are second with a record of 6-5. Michigan has this weekend's games with the Spartans and four with Purdue remaining in its path to a fourth consecutive Big Ten East title. IF MICHIGAN hopes to repeat as Big Ten East champs they must handle the pesky Spartans. This may be no easy task. But Michigan shortstop .Barry Larkin feels that the Wolverines will be prepared for MSU. "There's been talk that they're going to sweep us," said Larkin. MSU has a team batting average of .337, compared to Michigan's combined mark of .284. Leading the attack is junior third baseman Dave Corey. Corey is batting .417 with 48 hits. Junior left-fielder Steve Marod is hitting at a .402 clip with 31 RBI. Shortstop Cordell Ross is right at the .400 mark. Designated hitter Mike Eddington boasts a .385 average with a team leading 12 home runs and 38 RBI. Game time on Saturday is 1:00 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium.
