Late Titan rally kills Michigan at W orld Series (Continued from Page 1) Michigan outhit Fullerton, 12-8, and had the lead from the sixth inning till the home half of the eighth. They tied the game at one in the third on singles by shortstop Barry Larkin and centerfielder Mike Waters and an RBI bounceout by Hayward. The Wolverines took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a pinch-hit RBI double by Chuck Froning and a run-scoring single by third baseman Matt Siuda. Fishel homered in the Titan sixth to make it 3-2, but Michigan got that one back in the seventh when Hayward singled Larkin in from third. THE TITANS made it 4-3Iona seventh inning squeeze bunt by Larker. Then came Michigan's eighth inning defensive collapse. "At this level, you can't make as many mistakes as we The Michigan Daily - Sunday, June 3, 1984 - Page 11 made and expect to be victorious," said Middaugh. "You're only as good as your defense and tonight we just broke down and Fullerton took advantage of our mistakes." "It was pretty frustrating because we were ahead the whole game and were anticipating winning," said Froning. "We were disappointed when it slipped away. I guess it just wasn't in the cards for us." DESPITE his opponent's sloppy play, Titan head coach Augie Garrido had nothing but praise for Michigan. "We did not get caught by surprise by a very fine Michigan team," said Garrido, whose team won its opening CWS game for the first time in four tries. "We thought they were good. They were good and we were very fortunate to scrap out a win against them." Crash of the Titans Raising lel - - By PAUL HELGREN II ESPNs CWS coverage ok .. . ... But there's a Price to watch S CATTERED ON the coffee table in front of the TV was a typewriter, A a bottle of Hacker-Pschorr beer, a half-smoked Swisher Sweet cigar and crumpled sports pages from various newspapers. On the radio the Tigers were clobbering the Orioles. And of course on the tube the Wolverines were battling Cal State-Fullerton in the College World Series. Admittedly it was a cliche way (I won't say boring) for an aspiring spor- tswriter to spend a Friday night. But if it was, it was only too appropriate. The broadcast team of John Sanders and former Tiger catcher Jim Price treated me to a bellyfull of overworked and underdescriptive cliches all night long. Oh, I know I shouldn't be too picky. After all we're lucky the game is even on television. This way we can see our favorite college baseball team and be spared the uneventful stay in the Las Vegas of the Great Plains - Omaha. But that's really no excuse for the amateurish commentary by this un- dynamic duo. Their general lack of insight into the game and their over- reliance on pitiful phrases like "He came to play" left a worse taste in my mouth than the stogie (I don't ordinarily smoke 'em. Just thought it would get me in the mood for the game). Of course Fullerton's come-from-behind dumping of Michigan didn't do much for my demeanor, but that came later. Here are the comments I scribbled down as I watched the ESPN crew cover the CWS... " Nice featurettes on the coaches. I like the way they contrast Fullerton coach Augie Garrido's let-it-happen attitude with Bud Middaugh's I'm-in- control-here stance. * Looks like Casey Close stands a mite too far from the plate. He's a dead duck on pitches to the outside. I guess it's too much to ask from Price for an observation here. * Second inning and already the effervescent Price has said "He comes to play" and "I'll bet the pitcher would like that one back" twice, and "That doesn't show up in the statistics" once. One cliche per inning maximum, please. Commentators' negligence disarming " Can't figure out if home plate umpire Gus Steiner has one arm or if his arm is in a sling under his shirt or what. Wish the bumblers in the booth would clue me in. They just asked Price to tell us what Middaugh's signs mean. Price says it's easy to figure out but he magnanimously opted not to tell us "in case someone's watching that could get word to Augie Garrido." How the hell are they supposed to do that? The games are blacked out in Omaha. Is someone from Fullerton, California, going to call the dugout? I can picture it: "Operator I'd like the number of the dugout at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. Yes, the home dugout, please." " Can anyone explain to me why ESPN feels the compulsion to flash the wor- ds LIVE IN STEREO on the screen. Do they expect us to jam out or something? "College World Series in stereo? Oh yeah, turn it up man!!" That armless ump is great. A strike is "Arrghh!" and a ball is "Uhhhh." * They're keeping track of the number of pitches each hurler has thrown. At least the statisticians are on the ball. * Seventh inning. Hayward out trying to stretch a double into a double. I think there's a 160-pound sprinter trapped inside that 230-pound frame. * Good Lord. Price just said, "For all you youngsters watching out there..." That's my most hated cliche. " Bair's having problems throwing. That's trouble. Teams will run on Michigan the rest of the way. " Eighth inning and my boys still haven't said anything about the one-armed Gus. That's unbelievable. You mean to tell me an ump can signal "safe" with a one-armed jerking motion that looks like he's dusting a table and the "expert" commentators totally ignore it? That's just plain incompetence. I'll bet they're afraid of pointing out his handicap. Too bad. If he really is lacking 25 percent in the limb department that would make a great human- interest story. And if he's got a broken arm then tell us, for crying out loud. I guess good ole Jimbo is too busy telling us who came to play. * Ugh. Bottom just fell out, Titans have blown it out. At least Michigan put on a good show. Too bad the ESPN commentators didn't put on a better one.
