Sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet, the core is all-too- often overlooked. Better yet, don't wait until the next time you eat an apple because this Saturday night at Rick's, the Core will perform their ska/dance rock, found on their new EP, The Core. The four songs on this EP emphasize the beat, subordinating the lyrics to the music. The Core consists of Kurt Resch (guitar/vocals), Bill Corfield (keyboards/vocals), Brook Duer (bass), and Kenny Crisafio (drums). Resch wrote two songs and collaborated on a third, and his distin- ctive vocals lead the first cut, "Love is Around You". He adds a fluid, rhyth- mic guitar to the funk-edged rocker, but the song's simple, cliched lyrics drag it down. The next song "While You Were Out" continues in the same vein with Duer's bass supplying a slow, chunky riff. The EP's longest song (4:441 minutes) is a plus for a long dance, but again the lyrics are disappointing: Resch sings, "I Love You / I need you / I care for you" and repeats it, changing the last line to "I share with you". Bob Dylan rests easy, folks. Guest saxophonist Marc Reisman adds punch to the English Beat-like "My Friend". Even a funny break about an imagined friend named Tom doesn't lift this song from lyrics like "My friend / Dig those vibes you send", which sounds like it was stolen from the Footloose soundtrack. The EP ends with a slow dance tune called "Power of a Woman", of which the most exciting part is the addition of a Roland drum machine. It all boils down to art versus dancing - and they'll definitely be dancing at Rick's Saturday night.
