One year ago Francie Goodridge led her women's track team to a second-* place finish in the outdoor Big Ten meet, falling short of Wisconsin by only one point. Last weekend in Columbus, the Wolverines finished 77 points off the pace, placing sixth at the conference championships. Once again, the Badgers won the team title with 124 points. Indiana was second with 114. "THE MEET went just about as I ex- pected it would," said Goodridge. "I am pleased because I didn't think that we could hold on to sixth place and yet we were only seven points out of fifth." The women's team, decimated by last years graduation also finished sixth at the Big Ten Indoor championships, which were held in March. The highlight of the meet for Michigan was the one-two finish in the high jump by Dawn Rich and Angie Hafner. Elsewhere, Melody Middleton took fifth in the heptathlon with 5,310 points. The top four finishers all smashed the previous Big Ten record in the event. In the running events, Sue Schroeder faired better in the 1,500 meters than Goodridge expected, finishing third in 4:20.52. Joyce Wilson and Dedra Bradley placed second and fourth respectively in the 400-meter dash. Jennifer Rioux came in fifth in the 3,000-meter run at 9:36.09, while Mar- tha Gray was sixth in the 800 meters in 2:11, The Wolverines' 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a 3:43.33. FOR THE majority of the squad the season is now complete with only the NCAA championships in Eugene, Oregon remaining. Thus far Michigan has three women traveling to Eugene. The NCAA's will mark Goodridge's final responsibility as Michigan coach. She is assuming the coaching duties next season at Wake Forest along with her husband who will coach the men's team. Men run to third Big Ten officials still aren't sure who won the men's track and field cham- pionship Sunday, but there is no doubt about the accuracy of Michigan's third place finish. The Wolverines held the lead after the first day of the conference meet held in Columbus, but couldn't match Wisconsin and Indiana in the running events and subsequently had to settle for third after winning the outdoor title the last four years. RIGHT NOW, the Badgers have been awarded first place, although Indiana took the trophy home with them. A discrepancy in the scoring for the long jump led officials to first believe that the Hoosiers had taken the title by one point. But after the team bus had left to go back to Bloomington, it was learned that Wisconsin should have been awar- ded two more points in the long jump and as a result, it won the champion- ship with 111 points to Indiana's 110. Hoosier coach Sam Bell announced that he would go to a four-member jury of appeals to try to get the decision reversed and a meeting was scheduled yesterday in Chicago by the Big Ten to resolve the dispute. But regardless of what the decision is, Michigan will still only total 92 poin- ts, not good enough for any trophy. In chalking up that score, the Wolverines got first-place performances from Scott Erriksson in the discus and Derek Har- per in the long jump. - MIKE McGRAW SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) - Shor- tstop Barry Larkin, a sophomore who led Michigan to the Big Ten baseball championship with a team- high .388 batting average, was named yesterday as the conferen- ce's Most Valuable Player. Larkin, a Cincinnati native, was selected in balloting by Big Ten coaches after last weekend's cham- pionship playoffs in Minneapolis. LARKIN, A finalist for the 1984 U.S. Olympic baseball team, was one of three unanimous selections to the conference team. The other two are Michigan first baseman-pitcher Ken Hayward and Purdue outfielder P. J. Dietrick. Hayward, a junior from Pontiac, batted .333 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs. He also posted a 7-2 record with a 2.18 earned run average in 18 appearances. Dietrick, a junior from In- dianapolis, led the Boilermakers with a .407 batting average. He also stole 11-of-11 bases. ANOTHER Olympic finalist, Michigan's Scott Kamieniecki was chosen to the conference team. Kamieniecki, a sophomore from Detroit was 5-3 on the year. He pit- ched 11/3 innings in last weekend's Big Ten tournament while yielding only one run. Kamieniecki and Min- nesota's Doug Kampsen were the only two pitchers chosen. Two Wisconsin players made the all- conference team. Outfielder Joe Armentrout, a sophomore from Elgin, batted .306, and second baseman Brian Wegner, a sophomore from Waterton, Wis-., batted .304 and committed just one error in 43 games this season. Michigan State's Mike Eddington, a senior from Ionia, was selected as the designated hitter. Eddington batted .381 and led the league in home runs with 19 and RBIs with 60. His .851 slugging percentage also was the best in the Big Ten. The catcher selected was In- diana's Dan Winters, a junior from Benton Harbor, Mich. Winters bat- ted .426 with eight home runs and 57 RBIs. 4 4 I Jays take TORONTO (AP) - Alfredo Griffin raced home from third on Dave Collins' groundout in the eighth inning and Doyle Alexander scattered eight hits to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-2 vic- tory over the Minnesota Twins yester- day afternoon. Griffin led off the inning with an in- field single and Damaso Garcia followed with another base hit. Griffin moved to third when Lloyd Moseby reached on a fielder's choice and sped home as Collins hit a high chopper to shortstop. ALEXANDER, 3-1, went the distance for the first time this season, recording two strikeouts and walking none. Twins, 3-2 Reliever Ron Davis was tagged with his fourth loss of the season against two victories. The Blue Jays tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Garth Iorg after Minnesota had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the inning. Cliff Johnson stroked a one out single and, one out later, Willie Upshaw singled before Iorg singled to chase Minnesota starter Ed Hodge. Hodge had allowed only a single through the first three innings when Moseby started the Blue Jays' fourth with a double. Jesse Barfield then singled to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. 4 I a U 6 AsscitedPrss Lloyd Moseby of the Blue Jays is tagged out by Minnesota catcher Dave Engle in yesterday's game at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.
