Colby'College 'closes fraternitizes
AUGUSTA, Maine (UPI) - A
Superior Court judge yesterday ruled
Colby College could expel fraternitiea
in its effort to eliminate the rowdyism
and sexism of the sort portrayed in the
.movie "National Lampoon's Animal
House."
Hours later construction crews on the
Haterville campus began converting
the eight Greek letter fraternities -
which had housed more than 200 men
and 50 women members - into co-ed
dormitories.
"I'M SOMEWHAT saddened. Hut
times have changed and I don't expect
things to remain the same forever,"
said James Cook, an alumnus from Sear-
mont who spent the afternoon sorting
through memorabilia in the Zeta Psi
fraternity house.
Kennebec County Superior Judge
Robert Browne refused yesterday to
block a decision by Colby trustees to
abolish the frats which they said nur-
tured a "climate of anti-intellectualism
and encouraged uncivilized behavior."
The plot of "Animal House" involved
efforts by officials of the mythical
Faber College to oust a rowdy frater-
nity whose membership included the
foot-fighting Bluto Blutowski, played by
the late John Belushi.
ON THE real Colby campus, Zeta Psi
last week sought a preliminary injun-
ction to halt construction until the
fraternity could present its case in
court.
The frat argued it signed a contract
with the college in 1951 that allows it to
maintain a house on campus. An attor-
pney for Zeta Psi argued the college had

Testimony began yesterday in the
trial of Macbelle Pearson, who
allegedly shot and killed Ann Arbor
resident Nancy Faber last November.
The first witness called by the
prosecution was Donald Faber, Nancy
Faber's husband and chief editorial
writer of the Ann Arbor News. Faber's
testimony consisted of retelling the
events of the day his wife was shot.
PROSECUTORS later played a gar-
bled taped statement made to the police
on December 20 in which Pearson
alleged that Tony Frazier had actually
shot Faber, but in a later statement
she contessed that she shot Faber.
* Pearson's attorney, Donald Ferris, is
expected to claim that Pearson's
boyfriend, Ricardo Hart, intimidated
Pearson into shooting Faber.
Faber was shot in her car on Novem-
ber 22 as she drove away from the
Kroger parking lot on Green Road. She
died three days later without having
regained consciousness.
Pearson, 17, allegedly asked for a
"ride from Faber and demanded her
purse when the gun which Pearson was
carrying "just went off," Pearson said.

no legitimate reason to expel the frats.
Hut Browne wrote in a three-page
opinion that Zeta Psi failed to demon-
strate it would be damaged if construc-
tion proceeded.
COLLEGE officials argued that the
construction crews had to begin work
immediately, so the new dormitory
complex would be complete in time for
the fall semester.
In January, a special committee
issued a report that concluded the frats
- fraught with disciplinary problems
and conceding sexual discrimination -
had no place in the future of the co-ed
campus.
'I'm somewhat saddened. But times have
changed and I don't expect things to remain
the same forever.'

Zeta Psi alumnus
In return for taking over the frater-
nities, the school offered to name the
new complex after prominent frat
alumni, put fraternity memorabilia in
the college archives and establish a
scholarship fund for fraternity
members' children.
Hours after Hrowne's ruling - one
day after Colby's commencement -
school administrators ordered the start
of construction work that will include
structural changes in the houses.
